Haven't in several years. I keep saying each year I will but just don't seem to get around to it.

It's a lot of fun to go with a 22 rifle. I haven't been in a long time and miss it.

When you gonna come down and visit with me so we can take that ride up to CWMA? That's a place I used to do a LOT of squirrel hunting.

Bill, right now, I have so many things going on I haven't even had a chance to scout out the property that I got permission to hunt deer on. I sure would like to go, maybe when it cools off some, we might take the .22's and shoot us a couple of squirrels over there. Let's  see about heading over that way when squirrel season opens.

I have been  known to take my .45 cal. T/C Hawken and do a few squirrels in with it. It's been several years since I've fired i, mostly because it's more fun to muzzle load with someone....

This year if I get to go, I'll take my .22 pistol.

Squirrel season already is open but I know what ya mean about letting it cool down some it is kinda hot for sure. As of this week I finally got approval for the insurance to pay for oxygen for me so I might actually be able to do a bit of walking with the smaller of the portable oxygen bottles they have me set up with. I'm hoping at least that using it will stave off the shortness of breath a bit at least.

I'm behind, been doing too much here lately. I didn't know about squirrel season open already. If it gets a little cooler and some more leaves fall, that might be a better time to go. Is that area you mentioned accessible for 4 wheelers or will we have to walk in?

No public land in Alabama is open to four wheelers only private land so nope we'll either ride in a truck or walk and for sure I don't walk all that far. But now that I have the portable oxygen tanks I'm hoping to be able to get back a bit further.

Sounds OK with me. When the temp gets down a little so we're not sweating like a couple of pack mules, we can head over there and pick off a few squirrels. Maybe pack a lunch and make a good day of it.

I am waiting on a little cooler weather to put the snakes in the ground and for a few more leaves to fall off. I hunt with a squirrel dog and right now the squirrels are hard to find and if you pull a vine they will timber out to a hole and besides, I can't hit them in the head when moving like that. Maybe it will cool off in a couple of weeks. Last year squirrels were scarce in Choc.  I think it will be a little better this year. Year before last they migrated out of the mountains, no mast. The easter freeze killed some mast this year.

I have a question. I bought a .22 Ruger MkIII to squirrel hunt with. I don't think I can hit a squirrel with it. However, should I take it hunting, I will have to have a pistol permit to take it in the truck to my hunting destination. Am I correct on this?

You will need a pistol permit while it's in your possession while driving. If hunting with it, I'm not sure if you can take the pistol and another rifle at same time though.

Make sure it's NOT loaded while in the vehicle while in any WMA in Alabama. Just because you have a carry permit does NOT allow you to carry a loaded weapon of any type in your vehicle while in a WMA. They write tickets on that every year.

I've gone three times so far this season. As you can tell from my username, Squirrel hunting is my favorite sport.

I am using a full choked 12ga with 1.25oz of #5's. I prefer to use a shotgun while the leaves are on the trees.

On opening morning I shot three gray squirrels, a racoon, and a coyote! I got the coyote with a headshot at 20 yards. He never knew what hit him.

The second time I went I only shot one Fox Squirrel. The squirrels just weren't moving into shotgun range.

Yesterday evening I shot three gray squirrels and one Fox Squirrel.

I will be squirrel hunting as much as I can until gun deer season begins. Then I will probably shoot a few deer and go back to squirrel hunting.

I shot a Cotton Mouth during my second outing.

The cool morning made me go for awhile. Treed 16, but didn't find but four. There's still too many leaves for dog hunting.

More squirrels than last year, me thinks!

Treed 7, found 3 yesterday morning. The leaves are getting better, but still can't find them too good. One had fleas.
