Red Dots and Scatter guns
« on: June 12, 2003, 03:08:40 PM »
Just read a article in the latest NRA Mag SHooting Illustrated about using a Red Dot sight on a scatter gun for wing shooting and even trap shooting though I wonder if they would let you use that in a leauge???? The ( author of the article Clair Rees claimed hitting was much easier using the red dot on flying targets. I fugured what the heck why not and went down to the local gun shop to do some horse tradeing as I knew they had some Tasco's with a built in mount for Remington shotguns in stock. Since Tasco is out of business and taken over by Bushnell and the warrenty is not covered by Bushnell (that is what Bushnell told me anyway unless they changed it) I got a 179 dollar Tasco red dot for 60 bucks which I felt was fair account of the warranty question. I traded a old double 12 that had a busted and repaired stock even up and considering the value of the gun and what the red dot sold for before tasco went out of business (179.00) I figured I made a good trade.
Has anyone here used a red dot for wing shots?? I plan on trying it the sight pic is great and should be great for shooting a shotgun expeccially for those of us who shoot rifles a lot and get in the habbit of trying to sight a shotgun instead of pointing. This way you can sight the gun and point at the same time. Where ever you want to hit just put the dot. Jim
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.

I have tried using a red dot on one of my Rem 870's.  I got it mostly for slug shooting with the rifled barrel. I did try it on skeet and some trap and it worked better on trap for me. The biggest problem I found was that the height of the sight above the receiver is quite high  and you have to lift your head to see through the sight corectly. If you have a Monte Carlo stock this might not be a problem or you can always get one of the lace on types if you find the sight too high for you.
Good Shooting!

I made a stock modifier like beartooth sells that is a elastic band and pads underneath to raise the comb of the stock. I used a shell band for buttstocks and a pad from a wrist rest used for typing. It is a fairly solid gel filled pad I took the gel out and put it under the band to raise the comb of the stock. Jim
