best scope ?

im in the market for a scope for my savage 308 heavy barrel
i looked at a nikon buckmaster 5.5 x 14 x 40 with side focus
it has the bdc  reticle
i also looked at the leupold vx1 4 x 12 with the LRD reticle
and a burris fullfield II  with the balistiplex reticle
between these three which would be the best
i named these three because they are the ones that fit my budget which tops out at 300 bucks
i kinda like the nikon because i plan to use this rifle for deer as well as shots on paper out to around 400-600 yards
any opinions or advice would be appreciated

The Bushnell 3200 & 4200 Elite series can't be beat at any price.  Check them out.

I was going to get a nikon with a  SF but After looking at the millett that are out now with the SF 
I decided to get a millett

i was thinking abt trying the millett trs-1
which millett do you have??
how long have you had it ?
has it held up ?
any draw backs that you have noticed?
i like the idea of a lighted reticle for late evening early morning shots

I have several different brands, Nikon Monarchs, Bushnell 4200's and several Leupolds.  While there are better scopes optically, when all things are considered such as customer service, lifetime transferable warranty without the original receipt, third party providers customizing Leupolds and high resell value it's hard to beat a Leupold.

Yes, the Bushnell 4200 is a fine scope...... just put it on ebay along side a Leupold VX-III and see which one will get you more of your money back.

All things considered, it's hard to find a better value than a Leupold.

I have 2 of the scopes you're thinking of: the Nikon Buckmaster 4.5-14 X 40mm (pre-BDC reticle) and the Burris Fullfield II 4.5-14 X 42mm (in the tactical version).  Both are very good scopes.  I can't say that one appears sharper or brighter than the other.  I like the "feel" of the adjustment dials on the Burris tactical.  I haven't dealt with customer service from either company and can't comment on it.  I notice some votes for Leupold.  Don't have any Leupolds, but I hear nothing but good things about them.

It took me 6 months to find the right scope for my budget and uses. I  got the millett because I did not think the nikon and others were worth all that money .  I have not found any draw backs with the millet  but  They are a very big  scope  and  could be a  problem if you were planning on carrying the gun out on a long hunt. They do have a 30 mm tube and to me this does help in letting light in. I have not needed  any warranty work  but with what I have seen on other forums they  take care of the customers.

I have a  Buck gold varmint/Target  6X25X56 with SF  and use it out to 300 meters with no problems with zero.

I  do have a nikon scope on a hunting  rifle  and it is a good scope but like burris and leupold   I think you are paying more for advertising then anything else .

  Guess I have a different outlook on scopes for deer hunting in hilly, eastern woodlands. Things can get bumped around in the deer woods, so I like to stick to fixed power, compact as possible scopes.
  My Marlin 336C had a shotgun 2.5 X 20 scope on for a couple years and it served well. This year I have put my old 4x post & crosshair Unertl on it..

  The 2.5 X 20 shotgun scope worked well but I needed it elsewhere.

  I like to keep things simple and reasonably light for the deer woods..part of it may be because I hit 71 yrs old this year...LOL

I really miss 2 old Tascos that I let go in trades a while back.  They were excellent, bright, and clear.

Also consider the Sightron SII 3-12X 42mm Matte Plex Target Knobs AO for $319, the Sightron SII 3-12X 42mm Matte Plex is $299.  The Browning 4-12X 40mm Matte (AO) Plex for $299 is made by Bushnell and is similar to the Elite 4200.  The Bushnell Elite 3200 4-12X 40mm Matte (AO) Plex  for $250 or Bushnell Elite 3200 5-15X 40mm Matte (AO) Plex for $280 should get looks also.

Dollar for dollar i'll take a Mueller 3-10x44 Sport Dot over all of em. Best scope I have used for the buck spent. That said the Burris Fullfield and Bushnell Elites are great scopes. I have th Buckmaster 4.5-14x440 on one of my rifles and i really do like it. Jess
