Help! Need cast 30-06 load
« on: October 07, 2007, 02:19:23 PM »
I have been wanting to take a deer using a cast bullet in my 30-06.  Right now I have a Lee 200 grain mold, but have not had good success at higher velocities.  My lead is salvaged from our gun club's indoor Bullseye range.  I do use a gas check, but get leading and poor accuracy at the higher velocities.  I would also like to use powder which I have on hand.  This would include IMR-4064, IMR-4350, H4831, 748, Reloader 7, Accurate No. 5, HP-38, Unique, Bullseye, and Win. 296.

Does anyone have a suggestion of a load using the above components?  Thanks.

First , what gun are you using? What LUBE and how is it being applied to the bullets.? What diameter are you sizing the bullets to?
What velocities are you getting BEFORE the lead shows up.  A 200 grain bullet at 1800 fps will kill a deer. One thought, the alloy you are using is probably to soft for much over 12-1400 fps. I'd try a mix of straight wheel weight or a slightly harder alloy like Lyman #2. I would also get a chamber casting to see what dia. bullets I really need.

Thanks for the reply.  The rifle is a Ruger model 77.  Lube is Liquid Alox.  Bullets are sized to .309.  I get good accuracy and no leading up to 1350 fps.

Here are some loads I have used in my M77:
The cases are Lake City, the primers CCI 200. The bullets are cast from Wheel Weights with 2% tin added. Water quenched from the mold. they were sized 0.312" Gas Checked, Lubed with 50/50 Alox/Beeswax

215gn Lyman    RE-7 powder
                       26.0gr    1659fps
                       27.0gr    1701fps
                       28.0gr    1779fps

                      IMR 4895
                       31.5gr    1812fps

180gr Lee        IMR 4064
                       33.0gr    1976fps

I don't have leading issues with any of these loads, I think your problems are your alloy is much too soft, and the bullets may be undersized for your bore. It is also important that you clean all jacket fouling from your barrel before you try to shoot cast bullets. with bullets cast and sized as above I don't see leading until about 2100fps. I usually find my best accuracy in the 1700 to 1900 fps range, depending on the rifle.

Thanks for the recipes.  I think you are correct about my lead being too soft.

I use straight WW alloy to get near 2000 fps in several calibers. I have killed deer with a 170 grain bullet at that speed a time or two. I have also tried pure Linotype. i did not need that hard of an alloy. It definetely seems like your alloy is to soft OR your barrel still has some copper in it. I'd go with the alloy as the problem, and add some WW and tin to the mix. You will always remember the feeling of taking a deer with YOUR bullets.
