Alas, Guns and Ammo
« on: October 08, 2007, 10:39:43 AM »
Gosh, I just hate it when G&A loses more of its credibility. This time it's the review of the new no-lead bullet from Winchester. The lengthy article compares it to just about every bullet known to man except the Barnes X-bullet. Obviously this is just a promotional article that has no basis in reality. C'mon! a feature length article about copper bullets without at least a comparison of the new bullet to the Barnes X? Sheesh!

The article is one of those "I have pretty much no information on the new bullet, but it's great and it ought to do well" articles. Know what I mean?

The rest of the mag is fun and I enjoyed it.

About the only gun mag that takes me more than 5 minuets to go through any more is American Handgunner. The rest have little interest to me any more.

The ones I enjoy most are Rifle and Handloading even though I don't shoot a rifle much and don't consider handloading a hobby (although I do it because I need vast amounts ammo.)  They're well written and researched.

I've cancelled all of my GunRags for this same reason. The "newest is the bestest", until they get paid to talk up the next one. Give me a good hunting story anytime.

These days a gun magazine runs several bucks ! I do NOT have that much disposable income to waste on fiction. I am not likely to buy one of these newest/greatest products any way. I have tried nearly all the bullets on the market since 1970 and found them ALL to work quite well on the deer and varmints I have shot at(and hit). Many different guns and calibers were used in these "TESTS"!
NONE were really all THAT much better than the others. From Noslers to bulk rem/win to custom bullets (Fowlers and Bergers etc.) , a good hit resulted in a dead animal !

I let my subscriptions end too except for my NRA publications. But I do like to pick up a mag once in a while. I just noted that they are $5 apiece now. Even one copy of G&A a year seems a bit pricey now.  Didn't they used to be 25 cents?

American Rifleman, Rifle and Handloading seem to be the best of the bunch.  American Handgunner is OK, but the columns are hard to follow die to the fancy layout.  I look at the others if an article looks interesting, but am sick of the promotional articles telling us that the .499 Shazam Multi Blaster is the best cartridge ever, and that the newest overpriced Kimcooper is worth every penny since it shoots .100 smaller groups than a standard Remchester.

I used to buy quite a few magazines, but would rather spend my bucks on shooting, not reading about it!

I've got a stack of old ones. When I want to read a magazine I just go to the stack and pull out an old magazine that I've forgotten existed. It's like reading a new one.

I used to have stacks of old ones too, but got rid of most of them.  Isn't it interesting to see what the "latest and greatest" guns and ammo were 10, 20, 30 years ago?  Many are no longer around.  The same will happen to those today. In October's Outdoor Life, Jim Carmichel's column is about the next great cartridges.  The .17 HMR and .300 WSM look to be winners, .223 WSSM, .376 Steyr and others are picked to be losers.  It makes you wonder why some companies even go to the bother.  Then there is the article about the purple 10/22!  That should really set a trend!

Oh Woodchuckhntr, don't give up on the good old .499 Shazam Multi Blaster just yet. It has some real potential...  ;D

It's hard to keep in ammo since there are no commercial cases available, so they have to be lathe-turned due to the oddball head diameter and 5" length.  I should have stuck with a Remington 5MM where the ammo only costs $1.50 each when you can find it!
