right..  and thats what the site was kinda made for as i understand
The sportsman lives his life vicariously. For he secretly yearns to have lived before, in a simpler time. A time when his love for the land, water, fish and wildlife would be more than just part of his life. It would be his state of mind

Dale, et.al.

i can assure you that i am not on the attack.   i am agreeing with the posting of some others previous to mine, and added some more that i suppose was pretty blunt.    but we are something of a family here. whether a post is off-topic or not does not bother me when someone is hurting so badly.   i feel that my brother's terrible back and leg pain - with doctors NOT in concensus over how to relieve it - and the suicide of a friend of his due to suffering from back pain, were very instructive in my life.    my brother prayed (as some on this site do) and went to several doctors.  FINALLY a doctor told him to have surgery on his neck, not his back, to stop the sciatic numbness/pain, etc.etc.   that doctor was the one that helped!   my brother did/does still have back problems.   but the neck surgery proved to be what was needed first.    my brother's buddy did not get relief and put a bullet in himself leaving behind a young widow......    i don't want anyone here to go through such a tragedy.

our life, i think, is a running battle at times.   it hurts badly in some cases.   i think the philosphical dichotomy of good and evil (like hot and cold, light and darkness, etc.etc.) is all illustrative of a real war going on.    somewhat akin to the Force vs the dark side.    and we are in the middle with God holding out doctors, healing, and sometimes miracles before us; and evil holding out further pain and decay.

i apologize for running my mouth if someone has found it offensive.

ss'

Yet a little while and the wicked man shall be no more.   Though you mark his place he will not be there.   Ps. 37.

Dale,

Mrs. Goldhound here. First, our prayers are with you and your family. We have walked in your agonizingly painful shoes.

Second, a note to your wife and other family members: Stay strong and be extremely patient. When you feel like giving up, realize that many, many people really do understand what life is like for you. Try to find someone to talk with.

Third, here are a few ideas for you:

-- In Alabama, where we live, Adult Vocational Rehabilitation can be a huge help. My husband had two lower back surgeries before we met, and AVR paid for the second. It also paid for glasses for him and sent him to technical school. The government would much rather assist you now to try to keep you able to earn a living than to have you on SS disability. If my husband had been rehabbed, AVR would have recouped $2 for every $1 it invested in him. (When we got married, he left the program -- and he regrets it. He could have gone to school to be a gunsmith, but he opted out. He's still kicking himself, and it's been 12 years.)

-- See if there is a pain management clinic in your area. There are a lot of shady operators out there, but keep looking. If you can find someone who can get your pain to the point of you being able to tolerate it, you can make better decisions.

-- Beware of "teaching hospitals." We went to a world-class surgeon at a teaching hospital. He built us up for about two months, then abruptly dropped us. My husband wasn't a candidate for the drug trial he was running, and he no longer had time for us -- and he told us this. He also tried to send us away without any meds. I assured him that he WOULD give my husband a month's supply of meds so that he could look for another doctor OR he could put up with the bad PR that would come as every local media outlet watched me be dragged, kicking and screaming, out of the hospital. He looked me dead in the eyes for about 30 seconds and realized I meant it and wrote the scrips.

-- Ask everyone you know to recommend a surgeon. You'll hear good and bad about them all, and it still will be a tough decision, but at least you'll be armed with a good mix of information.

-- See if you can find another radiologist to read your films and to translate them into English. At least you won't be trying to wade through all that medical jargon.

-- There is no shame in SS disability. People will doubt you; they'll question whether you should be "earning" your living. After I watched my husband crawl to the bathroom for a week because he could not stand up, I got over the notion that SS disability is a bad thing. And I'm quite happy to tell any smart alecks who would say otherwise that until they have listened to a grown man cry in agony, they should SHUT UP because they don't have a clue.

Finally, let us know if we can help. If you need someone to call in the middle of the night, my husband will listen. If you find yourself in Alabama, we can recommend a surgeon and a pain management clinic. But above all, don't wait too long. Permanent nerve damage is a bear you don't want to wrestle.

PM if you have questions or want our phone number.

Dale, Maybe you should reread what safetysherriff said. When was the last time you went to church. Maybe you should just go tomorrow morning. You need to look up for answers, and not really on others...

I dont think theres anything wrong with what Dale has done here. I think It helps to use other people as a sounding board , just to hear your own thoughts out loud ( if that makes sense). Im sure he,s thought of all his options before he posted his problem. Its gotta be scary When doctors start mentioning wheelchairs in your future. Thats gotta get a man thinking. Dale I do believe there is a god. But right now you need a surgeon.

Any time you deliberately use symbols in place of the actual words that are censored here is the same as using the actual words them selves...and you did...

Let this be the end of it...Both you and Fred got a PM from me...I suggest everyone take a breath...and chill out...

Dale,

I don't know if therapy is an option for you, but you might want to look into it. I blew out a disc three years ago and it was tagging my sciatic nerve. Based on the experiences of others I declined surgery and tried therapy instead and have had considerable relief from the pain.

I totally understand why you would help the meds with alcohol. It does provide temporary relief, when the pain is bad, but the long term effects from this are not good. When my pain was at its worst I would slam down hydracodone or darvacette with beer or bourbon to take the pain down to level that I could handle.

It was tough later on to not rely on both to handle the pain even when it was getting better. I would encourage you to look into therapy if it is an option for you and give that a chance.

For those of us with back problems I have not found any sure cures, but have had success with the right kind of exercises and watching what I lift and how I lift it. I am by no means pain free all of the time but am able to work and live with the pain I have now.

Good luck to you and my prayers are for God to bless you and yours and show you the path you need to follow for relief from this problem.

Hi Dale
I have not read every reply here so if my suggestions have been covered just ignore.
I don't know where you live or your financial situation--but--
If you are going too a small or rather small city which does not have specialist it might be good too get the reference of a specialist in a well known medical center and go see him.
I can't imagine the pain--though I have had back pain on an ongoing period of time before.
I do know a Great Physician who cares for you and does know your pain. I suggest Him and allow Him too direct you as you need too go.
I will add you too our prayer list and stand in for you when we pray.
Blessings

It is obvious that a change would be good.
There are many options for someone as skilled and with the experience you possess.

To All.

I have to say this, and loud enough so all can hear.   Not all surgical techniques are for everyone.  My research before my operation showed something about artificial disk replacement.  The hardware is made out of the same material as an artificial hip or shoulder.  Great for someone in their 60's, but if you are in your 40's, that means, after about 15 active years, it too has to be replaced.  It is not typically recommended for a young, active patient for that reason. Some patients, in the trials didn't last for 5 years.  A persons body chemistry vis-a-vis rejection of the appliance will also dictate the choice of technique.  Trust me, no one wants to repeat this ordeal.

A good ortho spine specialist - which I am not - and not the members of GBO (unless there is a good ortho guy in GBO) need to evaluate Dale.  As for alcohol use, it does kill the pain, as well as the patient.  Pills will do the same when mixed with booze.  Hank Williams Sr. is the classic example, as he was using both way back in the 50's to control his back pain.  I am sure you see my point.  Dale, please have a qualified back specialist check you out.  I know you can find one somewhere in Pa.

Regards,

Matt
