Trappers will know
« on: October 08, 2007, 05:50:07 PM »
If you could only have one rifle for long term survival, what would it be and what kind of game would it be able to take?

Thanks,

Geoff

wasn't there a gun made that was a .223/12 ga combo??? I think it looked like an AR-15... this would be my pick. I have a tough time choosing between the two..And then there's always a  1911 in .45acp of course - Kevin

.22 has taken more animals over time, than any other rifle.I would go with that --second choice would be a shotgun.

If your talking strictly a rifle.
I also have to go with the above mentioned 22. You can easily carry a pile of ammo and in a true survival situation most targets would be probably be small game. However many a deer has also been taken with a well placed 22 long.
Also as stated above a shot gun is hard to beat. I believe most of the pioneer guns carried were shot guns. Choice of shot or single ball makes them a all around good meat gun choice.

I have a Savage model 24v-a  It is a .222 rifle over 20 ga shotgun.  If I could only have one of what I have, that would be the choice.  But If you could have one of anything out there, I'd go with the same gun in .22lr over .410.  Now you'd have a gun that would handle anything within reason, and still be affordable to shoot.
