grease barrel top lugs?

  some one told me today that i am not to grease the lugs on the top rear of the 1911  barrel?  Is this true?  Thanks Dave...

I allways put a dab of tetra grease on the lugs in my guns.

Absolutely use grease! But take my word with a grain of salt. I'm a bullseye shooter, and I literally need to use oils that smell pretty good because I practically bathe in gun oil. All my t-shirts have oil spots on the fronts from 1911 oil. 

If you're not that enthusiastic about your lubricants, then here are some more conservative guidelines for using grease:
1) I only use grease in the lower end after a thorough cleaning
2) All other contact points get oiled, except
3) The section of barrel that comes into contact with the bushing and the locking lugs. I apply grease to the slide and to the barrel near the locking lugs to ensure good coverage.

I use Wilson's white grease or Shooters Choice red grease.

If you don't want to use grease, that's OK, but use a good high tech oil like FP10 and clean and lube frequently.

questor brings up a good point. Grease will sometimes be to thick to use on some parts. I havent found it a problem on the lugs but do lube my slide with it anymore. If the weather is cold or your gun is sprung light to use light loads grease can be just to much for the slide to overcome. Im sold on tetra grease and oil. Its all i use anymore. Im sure theres others just as good but when i find something that works i stick with it. I also share his taste in a oily wardrobe. I run my 1911s when shooting in comp dripping with oil. Dont buy into the theroy that you can over lubricate them. the only problem you will ever run into pouring the oil to them is getting it on you and atracting dirt. My ccw 1911s dont get near as much because of this but there still well oiled.

I quit greasing the rails because of the cold weather problem.

Lloyd: Does Tetra oil smell better than it used to? It used to smell like bad cheese, so I started using FP10 because it has a good reputation and smells like cinnamon.  Sounds crazy to be so concerned about the odor, but I get a fair amount of oil on my hands during a shooting session and got tired of my wife telling me how bad I smelled with Tetra on my hands.
