t/c hunter package
« on: October 09, 2007, 09:44:30 AM »
Any opinions on the hunter package i have been thinking about getting one for deer hunting the  fields in Dutchess county NY rather then use a shotgun Shots hear would be to 200 yards. Is the package deal worth getting ,how are the t/c recoil proof scopes . The Hunter package i have been thinking about is the 308 Winchester with a 15" barrel and the t/c 2x7 scope. What do you guys think about this combo?

Sounds like a great plan to me.

The 308 is an excellent cartridge and will work great for what you've described.

While I've heard nothing bad regarding the T/C recoil proof scopes, my preference would be a Burris 2x-7x, or maybe a Leupold 2.5-8x.  I've had both of these scopes and like the Burris a bit better.  Optical quality of the two are virtually the same.  It's the field of view of the Burris that appeals to me.  The Leupold has a more constant eye relief which some people prefer.  I however, prefer the Burris for hunting situations.  Eye relief of the Burris suits me better under actual hunting situations.

The 308 will handle the 200 yard shots quite easily, and then some.

Regards,

Rog

you will find the consensus will agree with all of rog's comments, I think.. the 308 is a great choice, the down side is the scope choice, but it is not a bad scope... IROLD has a son that uses his with great results.. but everyone says the burris adjustable is the best choice, and the higher power settings will come in handy when you are on a rest and need the accuracy... for longer yardages.
I was thinking of the same setup, not the hunter, though. Cannot comment on the price advantage or not....  a complete 308 with regular barrel, and no scope will be available from several sources as well as used...
good luck with your choice... I will likely shoot the 308 encore 15 incher this year as well. looking for a burris adjustable used as we speak.. will let you know if I run into good deals if you decide to put together a setup instead of the hunter setup. I did have a tc scope long ago and it never failed me.. it was not as big as the other scopes i have had on my pistols.. I have not used one since... irold is the one to ask about the comparison of the tc to other scopes mentioned.. I have several fixed power leupolds..I have several swift pistol scopes in two and four power... there is no comparison between a two power fixed power scope and a four power for accuracy, etc. I would not hesitate to either opt for the tc set up or to put one together my self as suggested you can do..
in short if the price is right and the timing is right go for it, or put it together your self//
good luck with your choices and your decision. and let everyone know what you do and how you like it.

tanoose ,    As dk said, my son has the exact set-up you spoke of, He loves it !  He gets inch groups at 100 yds most of the time.  That's with my loads, its not much different with factory fodder.  That's one nice thing about the 308, its just not fussy what you stick down in chamber.  The T/C scope works well, its held together, and does its job !  For the money its hard to beat, its not fair to compare it to a $400 Leopold or a top of the line Burris.  I have both , and they are excellent scopes, they should be, for the money your spending.  I have a Bushnell  trophy 2-6  on a rimfire barrel , that is a good scope also for the money.....To answer your question though, if your getting a fair price go for it.  You can always upgrade the scope later.......if you desire ,   good luck.....Mike

I have the hunter package in 308.  I really can't say a bad thing about it.  I've never shot a deer with it at 200yds but I do use the same pistol to shoot handgun silhouette out to 200yds.  So long as I do my part it is more than capable of shots at that range.

I use H4895 over 150gr bullets in mine and shoot sub 1/2" groups from a bench.

As far as the scope,  I'm no pro, nor am I rich.  If the scope provides a clear sight picture and holds zero I keep'em and I kept mine as is when I bought it.

The 308 is great as everyone states and 2x7 power is all you need for shots out to 300 yrds. Me and my shooting buddy shoot clays at 200 yrds and I had my 308 topped with a Elite 3200 2x6 and was never in need of more power.  Shot 1.3" @200 yrds as well.  in the 2x7 range I will take the Bushnell Elite over the Burris any day, every day.  Yes, I own a Burris 3x12, only one with that much magnification for my 6.5x284.  The optical quality of the Burris is good but I have found the overall quality is not.
