Which Bullet Weights for Which Twist in .223?
« on: October 12, 2007, 12:09:15 AM »
I was wondering which bullet weights go with which rifling twist?  Loads would likely be loaded to the upper end of velocity.  What do you guys recommend for 1:8, 1:9, 1:10, and 1:12.  I have barrel in .223 with a 1:9 twist.  It seems to shoot everything pretty well all the way down to 45 grain.  I was thinking about getting another .223 with a 16" barrel.  I don't really plan on shooting anything over a 65 grain.  If I want to go bigger, I'll get a.243 for that stuff.

I've been leaning towards the 1:10 twist for 55 grain pills.

From my messings with a 22-250, a 1:14 twist is at the edge for 55 grn bullets. Some rifles will shoot them some won't.  a 1:10 would certainly do it and allow you to use 60-65 grn bullets if you chose.  That is just from my experience, your mileage may vary.

I have a 16" and a 22" .223 with a 1 in 9 twist. Both guns will hold all shots touching at 100 yards with 52 gr hpbt. loaded with 26 gr. varget

A 1:10 twist for 55 grainers should be fine.  As I understand it the 1:9 twist was a compromise to have a barrel handle light to heavy bullets.

I have two barrels that are 1:12 (Contenders) and they do well with 55 but absolutely love 45 grain bullets.  I have two other barrels one is a 1:8 and the other 1:7 (AR's).  The 1:8 will give me a 1.5" group at 100 yards with the 55 grain bullets but will shoot dime size groups with 60.  I haven't shot the 1:7 yet.  Ideally I'd like to find one bullet weight that will shoot very well in both of these newer barrels.  I haven't found a reliable source to see what the lightest bullet would be that you could shoot in a 1:7 twist with good accuracy.  I suspect it will be in the 60 to 68 grain range.
