It is almost Time...
« on: October 12, 2007, 01:17:10 PM »
..To go handgun hunting! Tomorrow starts a week long muzzle loader season here in Georgia and then next week starts about 10 weeks of firearms season and I am ready.

I have been out with my Longbow at least twice a week since the season started early in September. I had some close encounters but no shot opportunities worked out. It has been so warm here that I usually only hunted till noon and then ran for the house and some air conditioning.

Luckily, in just the last couple of days it has cooled down to the high 40s in the mornings and the afternoons still pushing 80. Much better than it was.

What are you going to be using this year? I hunted a lot the last couple of years with a .41 Magnum Redhawk and had a pretty good time. This year I am starting out with my Contender in 7-30 Waters with it's newly shortened 14 to 10" barrel.

I spent several nice mornings at the range and have it all dialed in and I believe I am ready! I really love that gun and have enjoyed it ever since I bought it new six years ago. It has worked very well on every deer I killed with it. I hope this year will be a good one for a change. Our DNR reported record low success rates last year and I know I saw way fewer deer than normal.

We can take up to 12 deer with two being bucks but with just my Wife and me in the house now, two or three feeds us all year,

Good Luck to everyone that is Handgun Hunting this season. be safe!

You southerners have it made.  Our firearm season doesn't start for a month yet!  And then it only lasts 2 weeks.  Anyway, I going out chasing bear in the morning with the old 45 Colt.

its sorta nice. by the end of the season there is too much hunting pressure but it keeps the deer pop. manageable, but we don't have many black bears in my part so that sucks bad since i do like to hunt them

Can't wait.  This year for handgun hunting I am using 357 mag, same I took a nice doe with last year.  It is a Taurus Tracker 4" .357 mag. being fed 158 gr federal fusion ammo. Within 40 yard I am money with it. Hunting down here in Middle Georgia.  Have seen plenty of deer tracks and signs over the last few months ( have been using a feeder over the summer, last 50 lbs. of deer feed went out three weeks ago, will be gone by opening day).  It seems the weather is going to do us right for opening day next Saturday.
Last year I took three deer in two days the 1st week of November, two bucks with a rifle one morning and the doe with the handgun the next day.  Three deer kept my family all year last year, now down to a couple ground deer tubes and a couple cubed steaks.
Everyone has a game plan, until they get punched in the mouth.

Live everyday as if it is your last!  Because someday you will be right.

I'm really envious of you guys, here in Pa we two weeks starting in Nov (firearms) only allowed to take 1 buck and 1 doe unless you happen to get bonus tags. In my region they usually run out of tags before the first drawing.  I have to wait all year to shoot at a deer....perhaps in 3 mins, its all over !!  Is there that many deer in the South ???

We have a fair amount of deer in SC, but my understanding is the northern deer are much bigger on average. Our average deer weighs 125# - 150#, we do occasionally get one in the 200# plus range, but not often enough..

It is getting close indeed S.B. and I have no idea what to wear :o
Perhaps the tried & true Vaquero in the .45 Colt but I am leaning more towards my (new last Jan) SBH in the .44 mag as it has not tasted any blood yet.
I will have to go with the 240gr XTP as there hardly has been enough time this summer to work with the cast bullets.

Here in Virginia it is bow season now.  Black powder starts the first weekend of Nov.  That last for two weeks.  Then gun season starts and runs to the first week of Jan.  Some counties run a little longer.

Can't wait for BP season to start.  All is ready and my trigger finger is ichy!  I don't bow hunt, never did get bit with that bug.
Just another voice in the crowd!!!

My sons and I just mowed down the peas and planted 2 acres of wheat, oats and rye this week-end. We should see some nice deer in Nov & Dec, no one else plants within 5 miles from here. Got lots of tracks, but haven't found a recipe for those yet ???

So far my wife has a 6pt and I got a doe, we usually get 6-8 per year for the freezer, still got a ways to go....

My two boys found GIRLS I tried to tell them that they are better off with the deer, but yall know how that goes, kinda like an ole buck, with his nose flared and his top lip curled up?????? They don't even want to stop to eat when that scent is in the air.............
