Anyone shooting a Winchester 9417?
« on: June 13, 2003, 06:49:09 PM »
These intrigue me to the point I have been thinking about buying one.  If someone is shooting one I would like to hear about the accuracy, function etc.

Thanks!

I know guys like the 22 mag and 22 lr versions of that gun. Henry makes one also with a scope setup already on it. Both are fine guns. I have a Henry 22 mag and I think it is great it is not built with steel parts like the win but uses alloy parts but so do a lot of other guns so that does not bother me expeccially in a 22 as Ruger and Marlin and others use the same materials. Either gun would be a fine choice the Henry was at least 150 bucks cheaper than the Win in the 22 mag I have no idea what the Win sells for in a 17. In the Henry catalog it list the 22 mag at $379.00 and I paid $300.00 for mine so the catalog list higher than what you can get the gun for in the real world. The 17 is listed at $459.95 so if it follows the 22 mag version as far as the real price it would sell for around
$380.00 I am guessing.  I would look at both and then you can make up your mind. My 22 mag Henry will shoot 1/2 inch groups at 50 yards with ammo it likes and I am sure the Win and the Henry will shoot good in the 17 cal. Jim

I don't have the .17, but i'd like to. I've had a 9422 in LR for years. They are great guns, and I would guess that the 17 will be too.

I went and put a 9417 on layaway this morning.  Already have a 9422M with a 22Mag scope and love it.  The 17's action seems as slick as the 22, nice, real wood stock, etc.  Hopefully I can make bail on it within a month, then run a few rounds through it.  Checked out the Henrys while at the gun shop.  Wasn't impressed with the fit, workmanship, etc.  Can't believe they put a scope mount on it that's bolted at the front only, with a "cushion" strip of rubber between the rear part and top of the receiver (kind of looks like a shotgun cantilever mount).

Dennis, as a Moderator I should not take sides I suppose but I am sick and tired of Marlin and Winchester owners badmouthing the Henrys. I have a 22 mag Henry and its  wood fit to the metal and wood finish is excellent and nice looking walnut also. Yes the plastic bands are cheesy I wish they never would have used them and the alloy reciever cannot be blued as the WIN can be but they are still good guns and as accurate as both the WIN and the Marlin. There is nothing wrong with a cantileaver mount and while I do not know why they just did not keep the standard 3/8 groove mounts they must have had their reasons. I hope you enjoy your WIN I am sure it will be a nice gun. I just think that posters on these sites just because they own one brand of rifle  should not bad mouth the other. The Only gun I have ever been disatisfied with and said so is the Savage striker  22 may I owned and I Loved the gun but Hated the Trigger. If Savage gets over there fear of lawsuits and starts putting decent triggers on there 22's like they are their centerfires now I think they will sell more guns as Savage do make very accurate guns and when the triggers are good show it.  Jim

Jim:  Didn't mean to strike a nerve- -or knock the Henrys.  There aren't too many brands of firearms that I haven't owned.  I usually catch grief for owning Rossi products.  But, standing there at the gun counter comparing the Winny and Henry, well, the Henry was about $160 less, but I just couldn't get past that scope mount.  You are right about the Savage guns being good shooters.  :D

Dennis, I have never seen one of the 17 Henrys yet so I do not know what they look like up close just in the catalog. I did not think they looked that bad. I do wonder why the monte carlo stock and the cantilever though. They must have had something in mind by doing it that way?? I think that cantilever looks odd on all guns, but if it works I would use one if that was what the choice was.  I like my 22 mag and any 22 mag that can shoot .5 at 50 yards is not all that bad. Good luck with your win and post some pics of your targets after you get done shooting. I have never had a Rossi gun but they look ok to me as long as they work that is the important thing. But then I like Mosin Nagants also so I guess beauty is not that big of a issue with me as far as guns go. I like a pretty gun as well as the next guy but their is something to say for ugly guns that shoot well also like the Nagants. Jim

I just picked up one of the pistol grip 9417's yesterday and the action is very slick.  I hope I can get out in a day or two to try it out.  I've got to buy a set of tip off rings and then try to decide if I have a little scope that will be the right size for this petite gun.  The checkering is quite good (the wood grain isn't bad either).  I've now got serveral boxes of all three brands of .17HRM and I will post the accuracy results that I get.

I bought a Stainless one piece rod by Pro Sport Products.  It came with the cleaning jag for about $21.  Dewey also makes them.  Grafs has one or both in their catalog.

that cantileaver mount is screwed into the barrel. this makes for much better accuracy(and there is no rubber mount in mine). the action works slick, trigger pull is a little heavy, but I'll fix that. I put a 4x rifle scope on it(over 20 years old, cross hairs cover 1/4in at 25yds) shoots a nice little 1/4in clover leaf at 25yds with hornady ammo. if I had a better scope on it I'm sure it would shoot a tighter group.
