  just today I was in their store looking for rings and a base for my new encore barrel, which put me right in front of the muzzle loader supplies. While looking through the very unorganized rack I overheard a clerk talking to a fellow about the muzzle loaders.  The customer said he had a flintlock and had never fired a muzzle loader before, what did he need? The moron told him to use pryrodex pellets and power belt bullets, I must have made one ugly face towards the clerk. When the clerk finally left the guy asked me if I knew anything about muzzle loaders  so I answered his questions and showed him what he needed.  I understand that not everyone that works there knows everything about every gun or type of shooting, I certainly dont.  But this attitude seems to come from every clerk there.  Its like you're bothering them by asking questions or to see a scope or pistol in the case.  To top off the trip I made my rounds though the gun rack and found a coast to coast shotgun in decent shape in 12ga for............$269 plus tax   I found 1 on gunbroker with a high bid of $50, so (in my opinion) not only is everyone behind the gun counter stupid they think we are too.

IMO, GM is not the place to buy or sell guns. I've found that Ma & Pa hardware stores sell at a better price. GM is a great place to get hunting and fishing gear, just not guns.

It's funny that this subject was posted.  I came on Graybeard today for the sole purpose to post my DISPLEASURE with GANDER MOUNTAIN.  I am also going to create one in a more universal category. 
Tuesday I stopped by Gander in Kenosha, because I needed a few things and then remembered that I need a couple extra forend screws for my Encore.  So I asked the gunsmith if they had any.  First of all he seemed extremely bothered that I was wasting his time for a couple screws.  We went over to the rack where they had 3 green laminate forends (there only choice) on display so I could show him what I needed.  He took them out then checked to see if they had any (again very rude about it). He came back later and said they didn't have any but could order them and have them in a couple days.  I asked if he could just sell me the ones in his hand from the display and he rudely said NO.  I asked why not and he said " why do you think.... if someone buys this with no screws!)  I replied, getting a little agitated now.  I would think that you could pull it off the shelf for a couple days, because I really don't think that you are going to go through 3 green laminate forends by then!  He stammered that he wouldn't do it.  So I put down the approximately $150 worth of stuff I had in my hands and walked out of the store.  Let's see $2 worth of screws cost them a $150 sale.

I'm soooo tired of the terrible service that Gander provided, nearly every time I have ever needed some type of assistance.  I have decided that I am done with them.  There are so many other choices in my area now Sportsman, (not my favorite either). Cabela's which I have had such great service from its almost amazing and other smaller places that have good selections and good service.
There really is no reason to settle for Gander anymore.  They used to be the only game in town, now in my mind they aren't even a player.

I like Gander Mtn. because of the variety, much better than anything else around here (Central NY).  The guys in the gun department are fairly knowledgeable, but not all of them are.  Recently I needed to dispose of 2 guns to get one that I needed (?).  The 2 other local dealers were too low on buying/trading my guns.  Gander was initially too low when I went there on Friday evening.  I figured out really fast that the clerk really didn't know anything, do decided to return on Saturday.  Right move for me!  I dealt with someone who actually had a clue!  I ended up selling the 2 to them, and then went to another dealer to buy what I wanted which was on a clearance sale and way below Gander's price.

We noticed that some guns had been marked up in anticipation of a $'s off sale.  I know enough to find the best price when I shop, but some people buy without checking, and fall prey to Gander's high prices.  You can find some good bargains in used guns occasionally.  They had a Savage 24 in .30-30/12 ga. with 4 chokes that I got for $300!  They now have a .22/20ga. with fixed choke that they want about $500 for!  That is about $100 over one of the gun stores.

 I swing through Gander once in awhile, mostly just to look. I'd rather help out the local(Dam RD Gunshop, Delevan) or even Sportsmans WH when traveling. I bought a new Super Redhawk 44 for $525 2.5 yrs ago. the same gun was $799 in Gander a few months back. I'd rather have Gander around than not though.
