Woodman's Pal

Well I ordered a basic Woodman's Pal today after I broke my hatchet. From what Ive read they're pretty useful. For anyone that hasn't heard of em before its a cross between a hatchet and a machete with a hook on the back for slashing vines/little stuff. Its got a handle like a knife with wrist lanyard. What do you guys have to say about em?

Well I got it today and it looks pretty intimidating. The factory edges however SUCKED.  They were only slightly sharper than a butter-knife. I didn't even try to cut limbs with it. After a while of sharpening with a file it will cut okay. Im still not done sharpening as its nowhere near the level of sharpness I prefer. The last 2 inches on the blade are useless. The last inch is supposed to be dull but the blade is still flat for about an inch below it. Ill file off that edge because it hurts when you hit a hard piece of wood. The hook on the back is great once its sharp. If I could chose between this and a good hatchet like an Estman or an Ontario machete, I wouldnt chose the WP. But once it gets sharper Im sure Ill like it more.

I have one for years, the best way to sharpen is to get one of those carbide hand gaurd thind that has the carbide V, the limb cutter you can file and work ok. they are good brush thing but to cut like an ax, only for small stuff.
