Dumb question
« on: October 15, 2007, 03:20:06 AM »
I've been reloading for over 30 years so I shouldn't have to ask this. I apparently bought Win. magnum small pistol primers instead of reg ones. I'm loading some 9mm lead bullets, medium load with Unique. Can I used the primers or should I give them away and get some regular ones?

Are you sure those aren't large pistol. ;)
If it were me I would by the standard primers just to be safe.

Hornady and Sierra both list cautions about 9mm.  Sierra advises against making small component changes due to increased pressures.  Hornady cautions about differences in cases per manufacturer.  Neither show the use of magnum primers in any load they list.

For those reasons alone, I would not use the mag. primers

large rifle , large pistol both and believe the small are the same now .
i have the two here but not the small pistol ones to look at .
which make ya wonder about primers in general .

I used to get the Win. primers that said mag or reg on the box and I thought thats what I got this time. Apparently not, this says Mag on it. I don't know if they still make the either or anymore. I guess I'm going to have to get a new Hornady book and a new Speer book just to cross reference. I usually use the Lyman book but they had no info that I was looking for.
Thanks all. Called the local shop and told them to put a brick of them aside for me.
