I am not sure what it is I said you are talking about, but I am sure it was true
as to the beer I had been on a bud lite kick but discovered something called "natural ice" , cheaper , good taste and a bit higher in octane.

oh , ya , me and the metros shopping alike , ya , well , I don't buy up all their hair gel so I don't expect them to be buying up my mil surp stuff.
Actually I was hoping to find lots of Y2k stuff for sale locally after Y2k was over , but it seems they either threw the stuff away or are keeping it , perhaps they are hoping the  G.I joe look becomes fashionable again , I hope not , that would just sky rocket the price again.

RZ do you mean instead of the AR7?

Yes, SharonAnne. I'd prefer a Ruger 10/22 with perhaps a folding stock and aperture sight.

Beyond it's compactness and light weight, the AR7/Survival Rifle's virtues are lost on me.

Just my 2% of a dollar.

RZ, shame on me, assuming. I thought you were suggesting the Ruger MK III instead of the AR7. Wrong Ruger.

was reading this topic the other day and i thought id better chek out my ammo supply to see what i had from collecting it over the years.good god, i must have a half a pickup load of most of the more common ammo.im in agreement with some here that have said ammo will be the currency dureing a disaster.very possible as quite a few procrastinators will be looking to catch up after the fact. lately i have been collecting all the resonably priced used 12 ga shotguns i can find. i have a lot of outbuildings, barns etc and plan on placeing one or more in every building and vehicle with a box of suitable ammo.i figure they will also be a form of currency, as anyone can kill some form of food with a shotgun, or use them effectivly for defense.next to 22lr, id say they will be in the biggest demand should a disaster befall us.

I would say any reliable weapon that uses the current military calibers-223, 308, 9mm, 45acp, 12 ga.  Personally, I will take a HD 12ga pump shotgun, semi auto 223, and a Glock 9mm. Any confrontations are going to be short ranged, quick and violent
You are going to be holed up in your secure area protecting what is yours. You will not be venturing out for the first several days and after that it will be to scavange for food, water, & supplies and then back to your secure area.
There will be no "friends" because if you have it, everyone else will want it. So, you will want to stay in your secure area and make them come to you.
Defense is better for conserving resources and manpower.
If you and your family have a well stocked survival "kit", be prepared to defend it to the death because the un prepared will know you have it and they will want it and will gang up to get it. That is why it is imperative that every member of your family is trained to use a firearm.
And remember, the body can go a long time without food but water is a must.

Liveing in the country where i do it would have to be the M14.  If they get to close i will have to go with a VZ 58 ,the more i mess with these they are a very good choice if it came down to fighting within the fences i have, or in close next to the house and barns .
If you get a good one it will evolve into your weapon of choice  and the 223 becomes a safe queen.
The shot gun is fine but i only see them as an alternative to a bayonet or handgun out here , we have to much cover and places to hide .
All around the VZ 58 would be the first one i would grab and i don't like an AK.

Besides weapons and ammo food water would be my 2 honda 4x4 quads. Roads would be jammed with dead cars and unsafe to travel if they weren't "ambush".  I live on the edge of the Bayarea that has more then 7 milloin people but a few miles from the edge of areas that with crossing overland you could get north away to Mendocino national forest and then real remote areas north of that in northern California where most of the people aren't.I have camped off my  quad bringing everthing I need for a week in the forest  My honda 300  get 30 miles gal and I can  can carry 5 or more gallons no problem

well depending on the type of SHTF i have a couple different rigs to go with me and my other half  ... anything from mild to wild ... One good setup for me and her also include four wheelers , i think in most scenarios those are tools that i wouldn't want to do with out ,rifle and side arms would go as follows  me 45LC Uberti lever action golden boy with a matching calibered SAA bird head "colt cattlemen"  ..For the missus Winchester model 94 angle ejection 357 mag with matching calibered Taurus 7 shot model  66 ..

And the ammo for all four arms only makes to piles of ammo .. these rifles and side arms are convenient, handy and meat providers (meat stoppers too) but my line of thinking for these is not needing 6 different ammo supplies to haul around on four wheelers on the old frontier trails scattered about the Arkansas mountain sides ..Thou with the saved space on ammo  (and ammo cans heh) a second long gun for both wouldn't be out of my line of thinking  ... that role could be filled by the AK 74 for the other half or the Mini 14 which she is proficient with both , as for me i could go with a number of second long guns from the AK 47 to the M1 garand  , reality is i would most likely take the DPMS AP4 in 308  .. great range , accuracy and stopping power, even though the A2 and the missus using the mini would save again on ammo keeping it down to three calibers to haul around should one be in the situation to have to leave their home in a SHTF scenario

Anyhow the combinations are endless with my collection ... i agree a good 22 lr shotgun and high cap rifle of some sort would be a good rig too .. But i am fond of the Levers and revolvers in my listed combo need no magizines that can be lost in a panic ...As for the second high cap rifles it might be best to stay with the A2 and Mini since lost mags can be scrounged .. or should i say more likely to be found in the wake of a real bad zombie infestation  then say AR 308 mags or AK 74 mags ;)  heh

I had an elaborate response planned out for this, but if it really came down to it, I think I would probably just make a go out of it out in the timber.  I'd take my Bear recurve bow and as many arrows as I could fit in the quiver, all the fishing hooks I have in my tackle box and a couple big spools of line, a dozen of my best #1.5 longspring traps, and my Ka-Bar USMC knife.  You dont have to defend yourself if no one can find you...or of you dont look like you have anything worth stealing.

Mr CJ sir. In a TEOTWAWKI situation, there are those who would gladly kill you for your Kabar, or fish hooks, or traps. And staying TOTALLY hidden is very hard. Even Bigfoot can't do it and it doesn't exist!

I really think you guys overestimate the common mob.  I'd be willing to bet half the people in the cities would starve to death waiting for someone to come rescue them.  Most of the rest will kill eachother fighting for the scraps that are left behind.  Some might flee, but those without any kind of survival skills won't make it far.  I live out in the sticks, so I could probably live comfortably on the farm for a long time.  But if it comes down to making a last stand, Ill be in the woods.

We've given this some thought -- out in the boonies where "social disruption" is not going to spread. Best "survival option" is to "stay put." I have a house here, water purification resources, diesel, tractor, gasoline, generator, house, barn, etc. etc. etc. We're not on a flood plain, not in the path of a Tsunami. We had a hurricane force storm last winter -- 110 mph winds for 36 hrs. Everything is fine.

"Gun room" has a safe full of options -- scoped, large bore, long range, semi auto. Thousands and thounsands of rounds of ammo, reloading equipment.

-- And a small cannon.

Personally, I think this "survival battery" stuff is beat to death.

it seems rather than 'beat to death' you have constructed a veritable 'survival retreat'.  it is easy to demean the efforts of others when you have it all.

I agree.  I deal with the "mob" everyday and they have lost the ability to do for themselves!   :(  The insidious influx of socialism into our culture has given most people the idea that the govt. is supposed to do everything for them.  Just look at the popularity of democrats (in this election) and use that as a gauge of the size of the "mob."   :D

Don't worry about them... they are the pray.  Worry about the predators!   :o  Like the majority of people on this forum!   :o :o :o

300,000,000 people in the USA. If one one-hundredth of one % (0.0001) show up at your place

300,000,000 X 0.0001 = 30,000

even a tiny percentage of scavenging survivors makes for a big problem.

Nasty jack do you plan on having a platoon defend your farm when people show up? Without a perimeter set up someone  would just wait for you to walk out your door in the morning to work  your farm and pop from a   houndred yards away . Then they would have your farm . There are alot or scumbags that know how to shoot a 30.o6 or a 7mm mag from a couple hundred yards. If someone stays put they would have to band together with family and many neighbors for any chance of survival especially with a farm that would have livestock and crops which many people would kill for to feed there family's

I was at a friends house that is a farm on the edge of the bayarea. The farms near him average 75 acres because it is protected ag land or it would be subdevidid by now. we looked down the hill at the gate that acesses 6 farms and talked about how easy it would be to take out urban gang bangers all day with our deer rifels if poop hit the fan and they pulled up to  the road with there 45 autos and aks in there cadillac escalades with the stereos bumping. they would not know what hit them.If I did own a farm wich I dont if the SHTF being x military I would band together with niebors and set up a defensable perimiter which could be alot smaller area at night to defend then during the day when farming well you military poeple know the drill. A few well placed snipers can cover a large area

WE thought the cadillac senerio was  humorous also. We thought the gate would look like a cadillac dealership after a few days since the farm is so close to the San Francisco bayarea with millions of poeple
