IMR 4227

Question, (and I probably already know the answer): with the demise of H4227, since Hodgdon owns IMR or whatever, can H4227 data be used directly for IMR 4227? 

I was given some load data for a 30Herrett barrel I acquired and the best loads were with H4227. But you can only get IMR 4227 now. I know I could/should start low and work up, but I'm just trying to look for a shortcut.

imr is packaging the h4227 as there powder now so its really the irm thats gone.

Lloyd is right, after reading that 4227 was to be discontinued in Handloader magazine I sent an email early last year to Dave Campbell at Hodgdon about the status of H4227/IMR4227, this is his reply...

The product name H 4227 has been discontinued. Future lots of IMR 4227 will be manufactured in Australia by ADI. While the color of the future lots will be the same as current lots of IMR 4227 future lots of IMR 4227 will be Extreme.

After getting a couple more E-mails like yours I went and double checked my facts.

What I wrote you about H 4227 and IMR 4227 is correct. Also, H 4198 will continue in it's current form in the Hodgdon line as far as I can determine.

However, in the next year or so ADI will begin manufacture of IMR 4198.

I hope this clears things up.

I think you are playing with fire here , ANY TIME you change powders you should always work up loads , even from lot to lot of the SAME powder .

Here you are wanting to go from one powder to another .  :o 

Even if H4227 is being packaged as IMR4227 now , there are no garintees that the pound of powder that you get marked IMR4227 is truly H4227 , as there will still be bunches of both floating around for some time to come .

You will be better off to start low and work up , leave the shortcuts for the drive home .  ;)

There are some Hodgdon powders that are exactly the same as some Winchester offerings but I've never heard that IMR 4227 is the same as H4227.  I don't think they are equivalent.  I also heard that H4227 would be discontinued and IMR 4227 continued but not that H4227 would be packaged as IMR 4227.

one thing you have going for you here is the new imr is packaged in the plastic jug and the old is in the steel can and while im the first to agree that even though there very simular powders ive gotten differnt results with them but if a guy is so stupid as to be running them that close to the ragged edge of pressure limits without testing new loads on a chronograph he about deserves what he gets.

Thats what I thought. I'll just start low and work back up. At least I have a possible idea of optimum with this barrel. Gives me more reasons to spend more time at the benches, both reloading and shooting.

I've always used IMR 4227 in my Ruger 44 carbines & 22 Hornet and used H4227 in my 30 Herrett contender. So back to the drawing board & shooting bench after all my old powder is used up.
This is why I tell people to buy a new reloading manual every year or so just to keep up with all the changes that are happening in the shooting world.
