state game land ranges closed?
« on: October 18, 2007, 01:15:09 PM »
Anyone know some of the state game ranges are closed? Are they cleaning up lead for DEP or EPA I would usually go to the Wexford range I like some place I can shoot close since I currently am living in Pittsburgh PA South side that cost a ot or require me to join the NRA. I was once a member and they send to much Bull***it and around election time it gets worse. I went to college in Williamsport PA and they had both free ranges Pine Creek and 2 gun clubs I was a member of Muncy and Norther Mountain.

I do a lot of work in Pittsgurgh. I live about 50 or 55 miles from the south side. I belong to East Huntington Sportsman ass. We have a range with 100 200 and 300 yard back stops. If you want to go shooting let me know. Dale

Archblackmage, Yeah, me too. I'm about ten miles south of Pgh. and have used the Wexford range for a long time. Joined a local club because of this situation. Really should have done it years ago.
Perhaps I may also be of some small service by inviting you as my guest. Ain't much different distance wise for you. Woodbutcher

Thanks for the help and invites if everyone can post full name and address of shooting club/ ranges that would be very helpful. In addition if you can add what kind of setup is available such as to support compound bow shooting target arrows, revolver's .22lr /.22win man 357 and 44 mag Dan Wesson's .270win bolt and .357mag lever 12 ga pump and 20 ga scoped combo pump slug and standard. and .177 pellet rifle 1000fps maybe instruction and rental etc.. that way I can be better advised of locations.

also found a cool link for shooting locations http://www.wheretoshoot.org/

I forgot my .50cal t/c flint lock that i never bought powder for and have experience with. I do also have ambition to learn to reload some day as someone's assistant :) rounds are expensive.

If both or gentleman could pm when you are planning on going to your gun clubs that way I can meet up with you under guest status and do sort of an open house tour. Also if you post through pm your clubs policy of posting firearm sales.

Archblackmage,

Now you see why the NRA is always looking for money, to protect your rights!  And imagine, they need more around election time!  Why do you think that is?  Archblackmage, I don't know what your financial condition is, and what types of firearms you have or the hunting trips you take, but I find it amusing when I see someone who has the budget for the expensive guns, scopes, 4-wheelers, 4-wheel drive gas-guzzling monster trucks and goes on out-of-state hunts who won't join the NRA because it needs money.  And then they bitch about the NRA more than they do about the liberal politicians who are trying to take their sports away.

We don't have any state-run ranges in New York that I know of.  Ski areas, but not ranges.  The largest club in my area has been without a rifle range for a while since some dummies were screwing around and managed to put a .30 caliber bullet thru a garage into a car.  Ranges are few and far between.

Well, I'll try to not be cynical, but people get used to the ranges being closed and gradually forget about them. Watch for "delays" in reopening them and an eventual back page announcement that they will not be reopened due to "lack of demand".

In this years book of hunting regulations the PGC has a page which has them explaining why they need a license fee increase. If no increase is coming they will be "forced" to curtail some services. And guess what one of the first curtailments is . . . to close the ranges on game lands. First they threatened it and then they closed them. Its politics pure and simple.

man you couldent pay me to go back to wexford
i used to go ther with my friends every other week..
then the yahoos started showing up with ak's and ar's  dont get me wrong ther fine an dandy use to have one my self.. but when you got a buch of rejects an gang bangers tryen to be like in the movies... its not worth the time an BS every once in a while i talk to some guys that go past ther and its the same thing as before..

used to shoot indoors at anthony arms out on leb. church road now i see it happening ther too
so your best an safest thing i would say is join a club were they let real shooters in

My son did a visit to Anthony Arms once. They advertise they have guns available for rent. He called first and ask the hours and about rentals. So, he took the 45 minute drive down and when he got there all they had were a few 1911's (which I already have) and some 22 rimfires. All the rest were at the gun smith getting the "once over". Yeah....it would have been nice to know that when he made the phone call.

You have to buy all ammo from them. Can't bring any of your own reloads. Yeah...I get the liability\insurance issues....but then, the indoor range I go to doesn't have that problem.

well the useing ther ammo only is really how they keep the doors open last time i went was last year and it was 5$ an hour... not bad for being a none member but thats the issue of any reject comen off the street .. so in the dead of winter it was nice to go ther for an hour or two an spend a few $$  but i rather join a club an feel more safe over all even if it means more $$ a year and a little longer ride.. i live in Pgh i used to get droped off an the girl an mom would go shoping for 2 hours an come back when they were done it was nice untill the not so ""usual shooters"" started to come and they dont turn a way any one for any reasions so thats when i stoped going

Oh....well...not turning anyone away for any reason. Well, you can't judge a book by it's cover, but the indoor range in Youngwood Pa. does a good job of controlling the shooters. If the range "appears" to be getting roudy or in any fashion "unsafe", they will straighten up the "offending" party in short order. I've never felt intimidated or uncomfortable there.

Woodchukhntr......it's a local language thing. You gotta get out and travel more.....expand your horizons. My Dad was from Georgia and my Mom was from Meadville Pa. When I was a kid and we visited relatives, it was a true cultural learning experience.

Hey...if you can read the book "The Yearling" and understand it, then you can fit right into most USA "cultures" if you give it a chance. Now remember....I said "most". There may be some you don't want to "visit". Heck....there are some that the people in it don't want to be there!
