As a footnote to this thread, I shoot a .45cal, 500 gr PP and cut the patches to overhang the base about 3/8" so I have plenty to twist. This slug is a cup base design so after cutting the dried tail, I can tuck the remnant into the bottom so as not to use up valuable case capacity. If you prefer to barely roll the edges of the paper under the bullet, a much narrower patch can be used, which has a side benefit of more patches to the page. My template is a piece of 16 gauge steel with the ends cut to about 40 degrees.
