Pet loads for 7mm Rem Mag.

I recently purchased a 7mm Rem Mag, I've never loaded for the caliber.
Not sure what projectile and powder combinations work best.
Looking for 2 loads a light game extended range and an elk load.
What's your favorite 7mm load?

I'm a work up one good load and use it on everyhing.  I've had a 7mag for oh probably since shortly after they first came out and have never shot anything except 160's thru it.  I like the old style Grand Slams which shot well in my rifle but that wasn't the case in every rifle in which case I'd recommend a NP. Speer Hot Coors were my practice bullets.  My preferred powder is 4350.  If you're interested in making a light bullet go really, really fast, you're gonna need to go to some sort of boutique bullet and you'll find your retained energy at distance isn't as great as a 160.

Yep I have a old school load that I use with all this talk of high tec bullets and such I have used this load with great success and see no need to change Win case Fed 215 primer 66.5 grains of IMR 7828 and a Hornady 154 grain old school interlock of course start below and work your way up looking for all the signs of high pressure. That round in my Savage 110 shoots a 7/8 inch group all year long and I have yet had a problem with it as long as I up held my end

My favorite long range load for Antelope is a 160 g Sierra SPBT with Imr 4831. On the low end is a 100g Hornady hp using IMR 4831 it was -.75" at 100 at .26" off the lands. This a Win 70 sport barrel. Another good load is a Hornady 139 sp with Imr 4831 neaqr warm.

My pet loads are Barnes 160 grn TSX over 61 grns of RL-22, Barnes MRX over 63 grains of RL-22.  Reloader 19 is a good powder for that caliber also.

Barnes 160 gr TSX on 60 grs of 4350,kill anything in NA DEAD.

Try using as much H870 or WC 872 (78-79 grains) as the case will hold with 140 grain bullets. Yes this is a compressed load. A nice shooting load everytime I've tried it. Not super speedy but very accurate.

My present 7 RM shoots best with RL22 and 140-160 grain bullets. The Nosler PT 140 and the Speer Hotcor 160 are great bullets.

No need for two loads, just load a 140 TSX over a bunch of R-22 for around 3300fps and your good to go for deer on up to moose.  Brett

I shoot 65.5 grains of Reloder 19 under a 140 grain accubond for whitetail, very accurate load.

I have loaded my first ever round for the mag. I bought both Rem and Fed mag primers and H4831sc, bullets are 140 gr SGK. I am loading my first 20, 50% with each primer. What primers do you experienced re-loaders use? I am very satisfied with my loads for my 204, 223's, 243, 308 but the Rem Mag seems like a different kettle of fish. As far as the powder goes, Hodgdon list 64gr as max, the Lyman manual 67.5. Quite a difference there, I see from Daniels 150gr bullet loads that he uses 64 & 64.5gr loads. These are way above the Hodgdon maximum. I ask these questions as 64gr of H4831sc, seems lost and lonely in the big old Mag case, shake a round and it sounds like a half empty salt shaker. I would appreciate any info as no-one I know, reloads this caliber. Rifle is a Savage 110 and the quarry will be Southern whitetails and hogs.

My Lyman 48th shows 67.5grs as max for 4831.  Probably since you're using the short cut version, it is laying more compactly in the case.  According to Hodgdon, it is supposed to have the same burning rate as regular 4831.  I'm like you however, I don't like to hear all that extra room in the case.  I am given to understand that if the powder is laying in a haphazard manner along the bottom of the cartridge or laying more toward the bullet than the primer, you can get erratic ignition. Say you were stalking thru the woods, holding your rifle muzzle down, and slowly brought it up to your shoulder to fire.  I don't know.  I do know I like a charge that doesn't doesn't leave much if any room after the bullet is seated.
I think I would try some regular H4831 or perhaps some IMR7828.  Did anyone post any results with
RX 22?

In my rifle, presently it is sighted in for 68.0 grains of Reloder 22 under the 140 grain Partition. Finely accurate but I don't know just how fast it's going though it's a brisk pace I'm sure. Work up to this as I did. The rifle also fancies the 160 grain Speer Hotcor on top of 64.0 grains of Reloder 22. Always start 4 grains under any published load and work up.

Thanks for load data, settled on 2 loads.
154 grain Interbond on top of 71grains of H1000 for 3075 fps.
And 175 grain Woodleigh on top of 70 grain of Reloader 25 for 2900 fps.
Both loads shot sub inch
No pressure signs in my rifle although they are both over listed max loads.

In terms of powder I have had excellent results with IMR4831, H1000, H4831SC and IMR7828SSC.  For primers and brass I use only CCI 250 and Federal.

For bullets the 160g Grand Slam worked very well for 20 years.   It tended to drop elk in their tracks and it took me that long to recover one.  These days I shoot 160g North Fork bullets over H1000 and 140g North Fork bullets over IMR7828SSC.

The 140's shoot flatter but the 160's deliver more energy past 300 yards or so.

i shoot combine tech. 140grain over 76grains of h1000 with cci 250 primer
this is real HOT load but shows no pressure signs in my rem700 sendero!

I shoot 66 grains of IMR 7820 and a 150 gr Nosler Ballistic Silvertip with Federal GM215M primers from my Ruger #1. All but one of my shots so far were bang-flops. The other was a 30 yard run. But then again I'm not shooting elk, either.....
