Pet load for .460 Weatherby w/405 gr jacketed bullets
« on: June 15, 2003, 12:12:53 PM »
Do any of you big bore shooters have a pet or suggested load for a 405 grain jacketed bullet in the 460 Weatherby?  I know it is a little big for plinking, but I want to play with it more.  Thanks

Buford,

For playing around and practice in my .458 calibers I use the 350 gr. round nose from Hornady.  Fairly accurate and doesn't poke holes in the silhouette targets at the range.  Lawdog

I played with a .460 once. After my shoulder healed I was ready to shoot something else. Kidding aside the Weatherby is a bit overboard on my list of playthings. If you are man enough to take it and have something mean enough to use it on you have my admiration. I'll stick with my "sissy" .458 Winchester, .450 NE, even my very "sissy" .375 H&H, thank you.

I know what it is, and is not.  However, it is another toy - I have a bunch of others to play with also - including the "sissy (your word)" ones you mentioned.  It is something I wanted to play with, now I can...

My pet load for the .460 Weatherby is
Hornady 350 grain round nose bullet
101.9 grains of H380
Federal 215 Magnum  primers.

I have a target  that was shot at 100 yards with this load
( a three shot group) that measures 3/4"

And I can shoot 40 rounds or more on the bench without any bruises or flinching!

I tried to talk you out it but you seem to know what you'er doing so I can suggest this. Use the Barnes 300 grain X and 107 grains of h380 in front of a Federal 215. Does not kick near as much as any of the 400 or 500 grain loads and is fairly fast and flat.

If you must use the 405 grain pill the same load will send it at about 2580 fps.
