Ideas for next rifle?
« on: October 21, 2007, 06:29:45 AM »
I am looking for a new rifle.  The current inventory runs from .22 long, 22 mag, .223, 243, 25.06.  I do not really care for larger calibers.  Varmint hunting is mainly what I enjoy doing. Hence the current calibers.  I have looked into .22 hornet - the 22 mag is on the low end and the .223 can be loaded down to hit the high end.  I looked into the .220 swift.  The .243 covers all of the options there, higher velocities even with burning less powder.  Looked into a 6.5 anything.  Not interested.  Once wanted a 17 Mach IV.  With the new factory chambering for this, lost interest.  I reload all that I shoot- minus the rimfires.  I am just looking for ideas that what I currently have does not cover.  Wildcats are okay, pending what I have I am not duplicating it.
Thanks in advance.

How about a 6MM-284, a.243 with an extra 300-400 fps. Easy to form also, just get 6.5-284 brass (Hornady or Norma) and run them in a 6-284 fl die. Leave a step at the base of the neck so the brass is held against the bolt face when you fireform them. Gives me 3900-4000fps with 65gr to 70gr bullets.

With regular .284 brass you'll need a Redding form die as an intermediate step.

Thought about the 17 K-Hornet.  Flat little shooter for up to 150-200ish?  As for the 284 series (6.5-284).  That is going to be the 10 year anniversary rifle.  It has already been drawn out for the wife to have built.  I just need to come up with a cherry bed room set.
Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated. Rifle s not bed room sets.    Any out there have any experience with the .14-221?   Could I purchase the bullets from some one, or would I need to swage them?

I don't think you have a niche large enough in your line-up and within your stated parameters for anything to fit that wouldn't overlap by a substantial amount.
why not get something like a .416 Rem Mag?  You don't have to shoot it (have some foolish friend do that so you will have a couple of empties laying around).  Just break it out and show it around along with a couple of loaded rounds and, of course, the empties and remark that when you get tired of the small stuff, you have a go with this.

Why neck down a 6.5-284 to a 6-284? These case's are costly, and the barrel life is about the same.I shoot the 6.5-284 and would not go any where else. You can resize a 284 to 6.5, but they have sprung back to a larger neck size after seating. A 260 would put you in the group.

I already have what you have covered so I`ll give you some that interest me. I`m loving a .22-6mm that I just built. An 80 gn. .22 cal. bullet at 3,471 fps., great for 400 to 800 yrds. I have also though long and hard abt. a .20 BR, the .19 Calhoon or the .19-223 Calhoon. I have a .17 Rem. and that would make you another good choice, or the new .17-223. The .17 AH is a great little round. I`m pushing a 19 gn. Calhoon bullet at 3,600 fps. with 10.4 gns. of powder. Max. point blank range of abt. 290 yrds. and don`t make much noise.

I've had a Remington 700 in .17 Remington that is a great shooter.  The only problem that I have ever had was a coyote that I held over on, forgetting that the .17 had such a flat trajectory.  The bullet went right over him.

How about the new Remington .17 Fireball?  If i didn't have my .17, I would get one.

I also have a Ruger 77-17 that is my favorite chuck gun up to about 150 yd.  One-shot kills are the rule, and it doesn't wake up the neighborhood!

I recommend a .223. I have one in a NEF Handi rifle and it shoots flat, plenty of power, and has almost no recoil. It is also very economical to shoot. Its also real easy to reload. You won't be disappointed. ;)

What about a Ruger M77/22 modified to fire the 7.62x25 Tokarev or the .22 Reed Express (based on the M77/22 Hornet gun)?

May I suggest a European cartridge? the 5.6x57 RWS which uses a 70 grain bullet and perhaps could be suggested as a Super Swift. in Eire it's used for Sika and Red Deer. If not the .17 Remington as already mentioned springs to mind.
