Savage 111
« on: October 21, 2007, 12:08:37 PM »
I am looking at buying a new Savage 111 .270 for my son in an attempt to take advantage of his on again off again interest in hunting! Is there any information pro or con about this model?

Thanks in advance!

Just the basics you want to check on any rifle.

If your buying a package, make sure you check the scope base and mounts for tightness.

Check the barrel to ensure it is free floated.  You can sand the stock if there is any contact.

Savages typically shoot more consistent if the tang is floated also, check that too.

The pro on the savage is if the man-child goes off again, and you don't need a 270, with a few tools you can rebarrel it to something you like.  Then slap the 270 barrel back on if he comes on again.

I have a 300 winmag I use for big critters/longer ranges.  I can swap from a blue 24" sporter barrel to a stainless varmint fluted 26" field artillery in less than 30 minutes.  I love it.

I just saw a 111 Rifle combo in the paper this AM for $319.98. I probably would not like the scope, but it is one heck of a deal even if you do not want the scope. If the scope works for you ; then it is even a better deal. I do not think this particular model has the accutrigger. Some model 111's do. I have swapped barrel on Savages and it is as easy as ncsurveyor says it is. Just make sure you clean it up good before you shoot it; inside and out.

I would look for a wood stocked version, the synthetic stocks leave something to be desired IMO.  I also wouldn't pay more for the package version of the gun verses the non-package version, the scope and rings aren't worth it.  What these guys said about barrel swaps is right on, makes it nice if you decide you want something different later on.

Personally, I don't think you can go wrong with any savage rifle that has the accutrigger.  Your son will probably enjoy hunting more when he has "his" own gun.

I bought my son a model 111 2 years ago. I took it to the range today. Got it squared away. He's in Korea now and I told him that I would find a load that this rifle really likes . Right now it's loaded with 46 gr. of varget pushing a 139 hornady sp. I'm impressed with the accuracy, but I'm going to reload it next time with IMR 4350.
