deer load 475 linebaugh
« on: June 15, 2003, 05:16:12 PM »
This will be my first year hunting whitetail deer (220# or less) with 475 linebaugh here in SW Louisiana. I would like to know what loads you use for this purpose along with the expected velocity. I'm using Hornady brass, Winchester WLP primers, blue dot, unique, 296, 231 and lil'gun powders. I'm thinking 1000fps with 400gr hard cast would do the trick. The range expected is 75 yards or less. Also give me the best bullet design in your opinion. I think 1000fps would be a load I could get lots of practice with without wrenching my wrist. This round with 400gr @ 1200fps+ loads wears me down after 15 or 20 rounds.

Thanks for your help in advance.
Scott

8.0 grains of 231 with a 400-420 grain cast bullet gives me about 850 fps out of a 6" barrel.  This load is very easy to shoot and I can state in good faith that you won't find a deer in Louisiana that can stop it.  Expansion is not an issue as you are starting with a projectile that has is nearly 1/2" in diameter.

Hope this helps you.

I like Titegroup powder too.  Very clean burning.    Check Hodgdon for the info

I have bben loading a 350 WFN over 14gr HS6 gives 1075 from a 7.5". Large meplate will give a wound channel on whitetail. Took a hawg with same load of HS6 and a 425gr LFN @35yds and hit behind right shoulder and exited center of left shoulder. As stated it is not gonna be stopped. Find a good accurate load that you are comfortable with and start fillin the freezer. Good Luck.

two favorite for light stuff are any cast bullet with either 14 grains of hs6 or 10 grains of unique. In all reallity there all you really need for just about anything

Hello Guys,

Thanks for the replies thus far. Could you all give me the oal you use on these light loads and your bullet design of choice? The only cast bullet I have experiance with is the double ended wad cutter in 38 special for action pistol shooting. I've been wanting to try out some lil'gun. I've heard alot of good reports with this powder. Do any of you have experiance with this power in the 475? When shooting 850-1000 fps is the trajectory fairly flat up to 60-75 yards. I have found very little loading data for the light stuff. Most everything I have found revolves around the beefy loads. Please keep your replies comming. All information given is well thought off and welcomed.

Thanks,
Scott

I don't have the 475, but I have the 480 Ruger (475 short).  I have used cast 370 LBT, 375 LBT GS, 390 LBT, 400 Lee, 400 RCBS semi wadcutter, 400 , and 425 LBT.  I have used Lil Gun in this with good results.  It is a good high performance powder.  231 and Titegroup and HS7 have been my mid loads.  The mid loads are fun to shoot.  John Linebaugh told me that he shoots alot of 1000 fps loads in the 45 colt and even hunts with that quite often.  The 475 bore at the same speed is devistating.

Hi ,my practice load in my FA83 475 linebaugh is a 425 wfngc with Lil Gun -22.0gr for 1250-1280 fps works great at 50 yards with open sights, not to much recoil and keeps your aim down.
