and another bullet and penetration test
« on: October 21, 2007, 07:44:57 PM »
Reading all the this about the bullets and their problems, I decided to a test in wet paper. I know it is not the best and there are no bones, but at least I get too shoot something and compare the bullets I have. So far I only used the 140 Speers to hunt with and I was happy with the performance.

I used wet phone books and some wet printing paper. I thought 11 inches would be enough (normal 5 ream
A4 box filled to the top). At the bottom I put a 1 inch thick maranti for just in case. This was done @ 30 meters

1. 120 gr Speer Hot-cor @ 2710 - This one supprised me seeing that it was faster than the others. It punched the same size dent into the pine as the 140 Hornady and had 61gr left. The core was in the paper and the lead in the wood. About 1/4 inch into wood.
2. 140 gr Speer Hot-cor @ 2560 - 60.5gr left and it broke my stop. I had to break the wood to get it out. Core and cut still in one piece.
3. 129 gr Hornady interlock @ 2500 - 85.4 gr left - I think because it was so slow. It only touched the wood but had the biggest "mushroom" the core came lose when I removed the bullet from the last pages.
4. 140 gr Hornady interlock @ 2540 - 58.9 gr left. Also still in one piece but it gave the wood a nice dent/hole about 1/4  inch.
I would not think twice to use any one of these at theses speeds and even a bit faster if I look at the 120 Speer.

Sure makes you wonder why you would buy any of the so called "Premium" bullets doesn't it. I have always been a fan of Speer bullets. Hornady's too but mostly for the lighter stuff.

Rick beat me to the punch. I don't see how a bullet(s) could have done better.  I think the selling point for the boutique bullets is they hold together better at the godawful velocities that some feel you need to kill a 100# deer.

My favorite penetration test is a big wild hog shot broadside through both shoulders, leaving a big hole on both sides and a blood trail that even a blind man can follow.

And you think I will be on a range, shooting wet paper if I could be hunting hogs!!
Send me 4 hogs, make it 6, (I also want to test Nosler and Norma) -  I will shoot them and
I promise I will post the results with pictures.
