30 06 load and cartridge overall length HELP!

I'm trying to duplicate the winchester x-pert 180 pp load.  I'm using winchester 760,, winchester large riflr primers and brass and winchester bulk pack pp bullets 180g.  I heard that this will duplicate their load or close as my NEF 30 06 really likes them.  Anyone tried this and can give me a headstart?  The other thing is about coal.  Depending on the reloading manual, it really varies from 3.340 to 2.750.  I measured the winchester x-pert factory and they are way smaller!  What gives!  What I have done is start at 45g and load 3 shells each up to the maximum of 53g for the 760 powder.  Then I decided that to duplicate the winchester factory loads that I would use their cartridge overall length for each one.  I didn't have any compressed loads but I don't feel right about this as thier is so much difference between the length of the factory loads and the reloading manuals coal. Help!

Dumb question, but I'm not sure what you mean by "duplicate". Are the bullets you want to use the same model as the bullets used in the factory cartridges? If so, then just use a Winchester ball powder and primers, make the cartridges the same OAL as factory ammo, and tune your loads over a chronograph to match factory loads. That should get you pretty close, at least when comparing your hand loads with the lot of factory ammo you're trying to duplicate.

A good place to start would be Winchester's web site to check the load data they publish for that bullet. The answer may be there.

By the way, I didn't mean that your question is dumb. I mean that my question about not understanding what you mean about duplicating is dumb. I really don't understand it.

Buckman, I don't know if this will help but I copied the Winchester Load Data from their website years ago before they jumped into bed with Hodgdon and the following info is what they showed for the 30-06 load you are asking about:

30-06 Springfield
180 gr. SP
OAL - 3.340"
Winchester 760 - 53 gr.
They listed only one charge weight, no mention of minimum or maximum loads.

What has me confused Bill is that in the Lyman manual (48th) they have overall length as 3.340, but when you measure the factory ammo it is like 2.95 or less.  What do I follow?

Factory ammo is designed to fit all makes and models of rifles. When I develop a load I use the overall length called out in the manual and determine which powder gives me the tightest groups.  Then I will play with different length cartridges and determine what length my particular rifles prefers. Due to different manufacturing tolerances, different rifles may prefer different lengths.

Since you said that your gun likes the factory loads,and have loaded 3 of each from 45-53grs with 760 I would shoot them and see what each loading shoots best.If best one shoots as well as you want you are set.Then I would find the oal where the bullet touches the lands,and start with the aol you shot and try 3 shots moving out by .10 till I got the best group.
I have two remington 700 in 06,as and example using 165gr hornadys in both one likes oal of 3.28 and other one at 3.35.They will both shoot 3 shots at half inch,just showes each rifle is different but with a little work sure is satisfying when everything comes together.

Buckman, I'm going to agree with the others here and say follow the manual's OAL and from their, adjust if needed to what your rifle likes. FWIW, I measured some of my factory Remington CORE-LOKT 30-06 180 gr. PSP  and they were all 3.190" (+/- 0.002")
so the 2.950" OAL you mentioned would seem very odd, IMO.

T^hanks guys for your help. I think that I will pull my bullets and go with the OAL from the manual and start from there.
