Best rounds for 270WSM??
« on: October 22, 2007, 04:13:37 PM »
Was wondering what everyone is shooting in there 270 WSM??

I tried the 130gr. TSX and the gun didn’t seem to like it very much. Went to the range and it was shooting a little under 3” groups. Called Barnes and they said it sounded like copper fouling. Cleaned the gun up real good and went back to the range and the best I could muster was about a 1” group. I shot 6 Winchester rounds after the TSX’s and then did one more group with the TSX. The second group of TSX were about 1.5”.

The Winchester ballistic silvertips just seemed to shoot awful so I won’t shoot them again. I don’t know if the loads are measured poorly or what, but they were pretty bad. Not to mention the fact you could physically feel the Federal rounds were hotter than the Winchester. On a side note this was my second box of Winchester ammo. The first box seemed to shoot okay and put under .5” groups at 100 yards. This box was just all over the place.

Anyhow, now I’m kind of stuck in a bind because I think the gun just doesn’t particularly like the TSX and the Winchester are just too inconsistently loaded. I ordered some 150gr. Partitions and I’m going to try them out, but was also thinking about ordering some 130gr. Partitions.

O, and I’m not a big fan of the plastic tip bullets. I’ve tried them in my 264 mag and the 270 WSM and I’ve found them to be less accurate than the regular bullets. My father had the same results in both of his rifles shooting Nosler ballistic tips and Hornady SST’s. Therefore I’m not real interested in anything along those lines.

I am curious. You said the first box of Win. shot 1/2", but the second was all over the place. Was the barrel absolutely clean the first time & what about the second? The Lubalux loads will not group if you shoot them after some regular, uncoated bullets. You mentioned that you shot the some of the Win right after TSX, that is not good.

Try some of the Win. after you KNOW that you have removed ALL copper. Shoot 5-6 rounds of the Win. before you even shoot groups to coat the barrel & then try for groups.
You will not make peace with the Bluecoats, you are free to go.

So far I am shooting the Winchester 150gr. Power-Point in 270wsm I am getting Chronographed 3200fps. out of my Remington 700xcr  and 1/2" groups at 100yds. Next week I will try this load for a cow elk.
Nothing like a Remington model 700xcr

Wow. That is some great info. I never knew this...

The first box of the Winchesters I shot right after I got the rifle and they shot less than 1/2". There was never any other round in the rifle before the Winchester being it was a brand new rifle. The second time I shot those rounds I had just shot TSX's through the gun. They were pretty bad too...all over the place.

Well, I still don't intend to shoot those Winchester bullets because I don't care for their terminal performance, but it's some great information nonetheless.

Thanks.

My 270wsm Ruger M77 loves the Fed. loaded 140Accubond.  All but touching groups at 100yrds.

The ballistic silvertips didn't shoot that good...the TSX's didn't shoot that good...went back to the ole faithful 150gr. Partition and it shoots great.

I read that the Power Points were a little soft for big bodied animals.  I used my Browning 270 WSM with a hand loaded Speer Grand Slam at 2800 fps to drop a big 700 lb cow elk a few days ago.  They shoot under 1 MOA and that is better than necessary for the animal hunted.

IF THE WORLD DISARMED, WE WOULD BE SPEAKING THE LANGUAGE USED BY THE AGGRESSIVE ALIENS THAT LIVE ON THE THIRD MOON OF JUPITOR.

I have always used Hornady and Serria bullets in my 270 but this rifle is not the WSM. I have never shot for groups with it either. I shoot to 200 yds and the groups have always been excellent. No need to shoot for groups at 100 yds. I hope this helps with your dicidion.

Everyone I've talked to and read on and also use in my 280 is the new Federal Fusion.  All say very accurate and very deadly on the ole WT. My Encore PH 280 is shooting < 1'' at 200 yrds with them. I'm going to try them in my 25-06 next.
