What hammer extension for 1950 Marlin 336A?
« on: October 23, 2007, 11:51:09 AM »
I have a 1950 Marlin 336A with the 24" long pre-microgroove barrel.  It was not originally drilled and taped for a scope mount, but it is now.  I want to mount a scope but I need a hammer extension.  The hammer is a little bitty thing.  It looks like the hammer on my 1893 Marlin.  Late model hammer extensions by Uncle Mike will not fit.  What did people do with Marlin rifles that had scopes mounted in the early 1950's?  Is there a product out there that will work?

dont know what to tell you about an extension as i dont really like them. Marlins have a tendency to get weak in the hammer spring dept and i dont want extra weight on my hammer. Ive got a 1952 adl 3030 24 inch gun like yours and its the shootinist 3030 ive ever seen. it will put alot of bolt guns to shame at a 100 yards. Workmanship is far better on that old gun then marlin uses anymore. Id sure like to find another one in 35 rem.

Uncle Mike makes hammer extensions for Marlins, BUT, they may not go back that far.  1957 may be his earliest year.  You might find his website and shoot off an e-mail and inquire.  Good-luck...BCB

Brownells list a "Hammer Expander" by CARLSON and it looks like it might work.  anybody ever use one of these?  My rifle is a 35rem.

JMO, But I don't think very many people scoped leverguns, at all, until the late 60's.

One of the reasons is that reliable, fog-proof scopes & a wide choice of mounts didn't generally come on the market before then.

The only scoped rifles I ever saw back then, were a few boltguns owned by what was once called "gun nuts" and are now referred to as "rifle loonies".

Gun nuts?  Rifle loonies?  Hey, I resemble that statement (those statements)!

For those of you who have a similar problem, I thought that I would tell what I finally did with my Marlin 336A and the little bitty hammer.  I found a Marlin 336 Hammer with Extension for sale, on the Auction Arms website.  I bought it for $10.  While it may not be "original" 1950, I really don't care too much, because I can now shoot the gun with a scope on it.  It is probably from the 1970's.  The spur of the hammer looks like a "T" in cross section, same as a late model Marlin.  It fits and it works.  Nothing else I tried was ever going to get me something that worked.  I was lucky to have found it.

If you see a EARLY model Marlin 336 offered for sale, and it has been drilled and taped for scope, don't assume that it will be easy to find a hammer extension to fit it.  You could have a lot of trouble.  I did.
