30 herrett load for deer hunting help
« on: October 23, 2007, 03:14:17 PM »
I have a 14" t/c in 30 herret I want to deer hunt with this november. I have some 135 gr ssp pistol bullets left. I have imr 4198 and Lil'gun powders. I have loads in my hornady manual for a similar bullet weight with 4198. Has anyone used Lil'Gun with the 30 herrett? I have seen one load elsewhere where 21.7 grains of Lil'Gun was used with a 125 btsp. I will probably jsut stick with the 4198 but, would like to test the Lil'Gun as I think it would work well with the 30 herrett.

Mine shoots best with H4227 & H-110 ( W296 ) with 125gr---135gr bullets. My old Contender Loading Manual shows loads with IMR 4198 with the 130 gr bullet. It shows starting at 22.8 grs up to 27.4 grs of IMR 4198. With your 14" barrel it might work. My 30 Herrett is a 10" barrel, so the H4227 & H-110 works better for me. The Contender Manual is to old to show Lil'Gun powder. I checked on the powder burning chart and Lil'Gun is listed one step below H-110. It might work, but use great caution when working up a new loads. It might not hurt to call Hodgdon Powder Co. and check with them first.  GOOD  LUCK
I also have a box or so of 135 gr SSP bullets left and only use them on deer.

No matter what a burning chart says, Lil'Gun can be both faster and slower than H110, even in the same cartridge.  In the .45LC Hodgdon shows it slightly slower than H110 with 240s - but much faster with 300s.  That is accurate too, I've demonstrated it to myself on my chrono.

I have a 13.5" SSK 30 Herrett. I know, weird length but I talked with them about a barrel in 12" and they had a cut off from a rifle barrel and this is what it ended up. Very accurate. I use IMR4198, 25grns and 135grn bullets. I don't have any velocities yet. Had to send chorno back for warranty work. This load shoots very good out to 150 yds which is as far as I've had a chance to test it.
I think this barrel likes the 125grn Nosler Ballistic Tips the best. I have taken two whitetails and one hog with this load. I really like my 30 Herrett.
Hope this helps.

Mike

Mike,
That is almost identical to the load I have settled on. 25.5 gr IMR 4198.  I just got back from sighting it in. I have always used iron sights but, am using scope for first time. It's a Simmons 4x with weaver base. Took a total of 10 shots to get sighted in at 100 yards. Then shot 20 more shots for the fun of it. Took barrel off and shot different barrell then put 30 herrett back on and zero was the same.Simmons seems like a good scope. Clear and adjustments were good and have held (though it is a new scope) Am new to the 30 herret so these some of the few rounds I have loaded and tried. Called Hornady and they said I could go up to 26 grains with the 135 bullet.  Did not note any pressure signs after firing 25 shots with 25.5 grains. I have a 7 tcu,30-30 and .357 magnum in 10 inch. Love the way the herrett feels and shoots with the 14" barrelAll I have to do now is what for deer season now!
I will wait until spring to try some of the laods with the Lil'Gun powder. Just not enough time to play with it.
