So I was looking up some reloading info, to steer me towards my next rifle.. and I noticed something funny.  All of the RUM cases, which are all based on the .404 jeffries have a base to shoulder length of 2.387".. with the exception of the .338RUM, which is shorter by about .090".  So why make this case shorter than the rest of them?  It seems that with the right recipe... you could try and make it outperform the .300RUM, but with less capacity?

Yes, it seems odd to me as well. When Rem. introduced the 338 version, they said they made it shorter because alot of the 250-300 grain bullets are extra long, so to seat them properly. I don't know about that. That is why the 338 Edge is out now, which uses the 300RUM case & is a screamer. Plenty of info on longrangehunting about it.

The one that should have been shorter is the 7mm, too much powder for caliber. It won't outrun the STW by an appreciable amount unless you load the heavies with a long, fast twist tube.

Yeah, maybe if they made the 7mm shorter they could make it a more efficient cartridge than it is, changing neck angles and such.....  but still with lots of powder behind it...

would be 338RUM not have fit in the standard action they wanted with longer bullets?  The 300RUM with 220 grain bullets are pretty durn long.  Seems like since they were chambering the gun, they could figure out how to make it work better...

Stan Jackson makes a lot of 338 Diablo's.  Basically the same as the Edge, 300 RUM necked straight up to 338.   I had a 338 RUM for a while and absolutly loved it.  I was running the 225gr Accubond @ 3140fps with retumbo powder.  The 250gr partition golds were clocking right above 3000fps.   You really want a long barrel for the RUM but other than that it is easy to load for and a real stomper.

Did you have to use a brake with it...? I've got a real nice shooting very fast 338-06 A-Square...and love how it shoots...but have been thinking (very dangerous) about doing a 338 RUM...maybe with a 26" Broghton 5c barrel...or a 26" Lilja 3 groove...

I had a brake on my 338 Rum,  It was great you could just about watch it cut paper.  The brake was done by Homer Strickland and sadly he no longer does any gunsmithing.  It was done in such a way that the bulk of the blast is still directed away from the shooter so it wasn't noticably louder than an unbraked rifle.  He made the best muzle brake I had ever used.  Most of the 338 Diablo's that stand jackson is making also have brakes.  They really tame down the Rum cartrdiges.
