Winchester 1895 sights
« on: October 25, 2007, 04:12:06 PM »
I picked up a Winchester 1895 (in .270) with one of those reproduction Lyman 38 receiver mounted sights. Finally got it up to the range and found that even with slow handloads and the rear sight cranked as low as possible, the thing still shoots 10" high at 100 yards. Since the rear sight can't go any lower and allow the bolt to cycle, looks like I've got to get a taller front sight. I've looked all over the web for anyone who makes a replacement front sight (it pins into the sight base rather than the typical dovetail). No luck from the usuals like Brownells or Numrich. Anybody know of a source for new front sight blades?

I've got a buddy that had a Trapdoor with the same problem.  He ended up taking a piece of flat steel, shaping it, drilling a hole for the pin and filing down the sight until he got it to shoot where he wanted it to.

XS Express will sell you the proper, higher, pinned-in front sight blade for your M1895 Win as a separate item for about $30.
You need to telephone their customer service & ask for it -  it's  part # *1-WI-0017-4- .
