« on: October 25, 2007, 04:30:13 PM »
I have 21 coyotes and 14 fox in the first 3 checks.Lots of bird hunters here so I have to stay away form some good locations,I don't want hunting dog problems.Had a fox double at the first location this morning.Nice way to start the day.Lots more fox around this year.Got to go turn some "Flea Taxis" on the stretchers.Hope everybody does good.Gas prices dropped to $2.95 a gallon yesterday. It's been $3.19 a gallon.Been setting 2 traps per location and covering lots of miles.

Good on the fur in traps yotero!  To save yourself some time, buy some borax and dust borax on wet skin side of  your canines and cats or furs that need to be turned .  This will eliminate having to turn furs;  this saves alot of time as you  just have to skin, flesh , dust with borax and put on stretchers.  I used wooden stretchers..  Try a couple  to see and i bet you will go that way.  The borax doesnt hurt fur or skin and doesnt hurt anything, so dont let a furbuyer BS you if he ask on the powder borax residue on  pelt.   Keep up putting the bracelets on the canines.

Had 11 coyotes, one fox,a sumo coon and 3 badgers today.I turned the badgers loose as they are late primers and didn't have foot damage.I hate releasing those bad boys,I just don't like my hands that close to those jaws.I haven't been bite yet,key word being yet.I pulled part of one line today.They,3 ranchers, dumped about 3000 cows in the pastures I was trapping.I'm going to quit when I have 50 coyotes.I have way to much other stuff going on in my life to keep 3 or 4 lines out.I have a guy that wants 50 coyotes and whatever fox I have.Hey Rdfx my father timed me today, skinned a hot coyote in slightly under 2 minutes. That was after I cut the front feet off.Everything I've caught so far has been on baited flat sets.I haven't made a dirthole yet.I haven't used any urine or gland lure either.I'm experimenting this fall.Got to go turn some flea taxi's.

:) Howdy! Coyotero:  What can you get for a coyote and fox pelt these days up your way?  It probably varies with the part of the country you do your trapping.  Here in Texas, a coyote pelt is practically worthless.  Also, what is a "sumo" coon?  At one time here in Texas a coon hide would bring good money.  Good luck on your trapping!

Happy Trails!
Always,

My coyotes should run in the mid to upper $40.00 bracket.Don't know what fox will go for. There are more fox around this year than I've seen since the early 80's.The sumo coon weighed 41 pounds.I'm going to start pulling the remaining lines tomorrow.I should have my fifty coyotes by the time I'm done pulling. It was 22 degrees this morning.Fur has been moving good.I wish I wasn't so beat up.This would have been the fall to run 4 lines with about 300 traps. So far I haven't had enough rain so that I had to redo any sets.I have one location that is a bottle neck between two huge drainages.I have 8 catch circles there already. There are 9 or 10 trails that pinch down to an area about 30 feet wide.I set on both sides of the narrow spot.I started with 2 sets in that location and now I have 5.I've only caught 21 skunks so far.I didn't jack the pan tension up because of all the fox.Took my Father out several times checking traps,he's 86 years old.He really enjoys it.His job is to keep track of the mileage, what got caught at what location and what bait was used.He records what the weather was like the night before we check. One of the ranchers told me he was bragging at coffee the other day. They were kidding him about me quiting so early this year.He told them I'm getting so good I can catch coyotes downtown and don't have to go out to their places. He told them I get depressed if I don't have something at every location.I told him that's not true. They're supposed to be in every trap!!!My father moved from Florida to Montana so he could go hunting, trapping and fishing with me.

I ended up with 54 coyotes,19 fox,2 coon and 24 skunks.I released all the badgers as they weren't close to prime yet.Just waiting for my check.Got all the traps pulled. It was a high of 37 degrees today.I'll probably set a few snares when it gets and stays colder. How is everybody doing?

Tom
I have 2 bad discs in my low back, bad left knee(torn ligaments) and torn rotator cuff in my left shoulder. This and I'm left handed.I just can't go like I used to.Nobody around here is trapping. There is a guy over in N.D. that runs a "trap line" he can check with binoculars from his yard.Down in the Breaks,in cat country that is a different story. We've had a bad dry spell and lost most of the sloughs. They're not going to have trapping on the refuge this year. They said with their reduction in force they don't have the manpower to monitor it.Heck I used to stop at the headquarters, daily, and fill out a catch sheet.Have a good run on the line.

Coyotero:  Good to hear ya done good.  Happy that you still have your Dad, and you take him with you.  That really warmed my heart.
I know what yer saying about being beat up.  Age is hurting me too.  Going on 66 years now, and trapping just kills my knees anymore!
Wish I was a few years younger.  Ah, don't we all.
You are a good trapper.  Regards, Gillette

Gillette      I wish I could take some of the young trappers on the forum out on the line for a couple of days.It would make catching coyotes, maybe, simpler for them. There aren't any young guys around here that are interested in learning. My girlfriend already has 4 0r 5 fur coats.Next year I'm going to catch enough coyotes to have a kingsize coyote comforter made for my bed.I saw one a long time ago and thought it was beautiful.I may still run some snare lines after all the pheasant hunters leave.

Yotero, if you make that yote comforter, put a edge on it of fisher, very pretty.  You could use some other dark fur if you want .  Possibly beaver would work.... Friend of mine has  one is very nice.
