Which chronograph?
« on: June 16, 2003, 03:56:35 PM »
I’m considering the purchase of a chronograph but keep remembering a line I read somewhere to the effect of “ it not a matter of if you will shoot the skyscreen, but when” So I need to get some recommendations on which brands have replacement parts available for this situation. My second criteria is a relatively low price. I did see some of the Chrony’s in a catalog for about $100, but apparently they don’t allow for replacement of the sky screen.

coltfan,
Pact and Ohler both have replacement skyscreens for their equipment - Chrony has it all in one big unit and if you "kill" it you can trade it in on a new one. I would bet that most of the chronographs that have remote placed sensors will have replacements for those parts.

PS - buy the best unit with the features you want that you can afford.

Hodgdon, Lyman, Speer, Sierra, Hornady = reliable resources
so and so's pages on the internet = not reliable resources
Alway check loads you find on the internet against manuals.
NEVER exceed maximum listed loads.

Chrony also wants some $$ along with the unit you shot.  Don't know how much but you can check with them.

they offer great deals on replacement screens and risers. picked one up for a song but missing one riser. called and explained and they set me up with new risers and screens . the 3 risers and screens I had were metal, they now make them plastic to reduce schrapnel. sent me a manual no charge. now I just usually forget to use it, Raymond

My first chrony was the origional type with the works in the chrony.  The thing I didn't like about it was it was really agressive and I had to shoot it ,lightly, several times.  Each time it tamed down for awhile and worked good for awhile after.  Kind of like when I used to shoot my German Shorthair when he flushed pheasants out at 100 yards.  A little dose of lead made him into a pretty good dog.

Well, one day that dang chrony really got mean and I had to put a 30-30 round right through its brain.  It saved me from a mauling by that chrony but the bullet in the brain killed it dead.

I called chrony and they told me about the master chrony that had the works at the end of a 20 foot line.  If you had to shoot it there was a much cheaper cost to replace the box.

I had them send me one and it worked pretty good for many years.  One day I was testing some Hornet loads from my 10" Contender when that master chrony started gettin mean.  I beaned it once, right accross the box and it stopped its attack but the very next shot it charged and and I had to kill it.  I still had the works though and for $40 total, including shipping, Chrony sent me a new box with new sky screens and that included a set of plastic deflectors for when I shoot my muzzle loader.  They were an extra $10 so I guess the box itself was only $30.

This last one has been pretty tame.  I think they told it before they shipped it that I was quick to shoot when I feel endangered.

Anyway, I would have to say that I have liked my chrony but I would suggest that if you get one, get the master chrony.

You can only hit the target if the barrel is pointed in the right direction when the bullet leaves the barrel.

I like my old Ohler

A long time ago (15-20 yrs?) I bought an Ohler (33 I think).  Its been a reliable workhorse for me.  Shoot, one set of batteries lasted for over 10 years! Well, I probably didn't use it as often as some folks do. Ohler service has been excellent. Only one sky screen has ever threatened me and it died quickly.  I much prefer the remote screens so I can read the info at the bench.  The new Ohlers are probably even better - they are a bit spendy but they would be my first choice.
