« on: October 27, 2007, 05:19:09 AM »

I just got a .308 barrel for my NEF. I would like to know which is a proven (to you) factory loading for it .

I would like to spare my shoulder a bit also..

                                                                                 thanks....ironglow

Iron :  It will be up to your rifle to tell you which round it likes the best, I would pick up a box of the major manu. and give it a try at the range, the most accurate of the 2 or 3 brands is the one I would hunt with,  as far as the shoulder goes you might try some Managed Recoil ammo thats out there.   JIM

I would be surprised if any 150 grain bullet from Remington or Winchester wouldn't work just fine for you. I think the standard Power points or Corelokts would be my choice if I didn't reload.

Any good factory ammo that shoots well in your rifle from 150 gr. on up, and with a bullet designed for the game hunted. The poster above mentioned Remington and Winchester loads, and they are fine, as well as inexpensive. You may also want to consider the Federal Premium line of ammo. My 308s like both the Barnes TSX. The Nosler ballistic tip (or as Winchester loads it, the ballistic Silvertip), seem to work great for my guns. I hunt in NY, too, and they have all been one-shot kills.

You really can't go wrong here....The caliber is a great choice for whitetails, and if you find an accurate load, you are all set.

I've shot two deer with my 308 Win.  One dropped in it's tracks, the other ran 45 yards or so after being hit in the heart/lung area.  Both deer were shot with Remington's 150 gr. Pointed Soft Point Core Lokt ammo.  That's all I've used.  No reason to change.

I second that. That is the only round I have and will use out of my 308 for deer or hogs.

I like Federal Fusion. Try any of them 150, 165 or 180.  See which one your rifle likes. My 308 NEF survivor likes the 180 the best.
