Thumbhole or regular prohunter butt stock?
« on: October 28, 2007, 11:36:12 AM »
I am trying to decide which butt stock to buy for my Pro-Hunter frame.  I see the regular frame has more recoil cushioning inserts.  Has anyone compared the two, is there much of a difference?  I like the feel of a thumbhole but is there much of a problem getting ready to take the shot because you have to remove your thumb to work the hammer?  Do they work ok with heavy gloves?  What is your preference between the two?

I have a laminate thumbhole stock on my .209x50 Encore and love it. First thumbhole I have ever had, but it won't be the last.
With the 120 grain load of FFG and a 240 grain .44 sabot the recoil is very comfortable.

I believe they are making a prohunter thumbhole stock now.  You can check the T/C website under accessories.  I prefer laminates and use an ambi thumbhole stock from Gunstocks Inc.  They are a GBO sponsor.

I have shot both of the Pro-hunter stocks. I think the thumb hole is more controllable and comfortable to me. Both of my Encores have thumb hole stocks. One has a Fox ridge outfitters walnut thumb hole and the other has the pro-hunter thumb hole. It come down to personal preference.

I did not notice any real difference in felt recoil from the thumb hole to the standard pro-hunter stock.

I used to have a couple of the wood regular stocks and liked them. Haven't shot a regular pro hunter stock but I Love my thumbhole pro hunter stock. Wished I had a thumbhole on my G2.

I have a synthetic  thumb hole on my encore flex-tex very nice recoil control.  I would not go back to the standard stock.

i like the regular encore stock but i like the thumbole better. if it had more of a palm swell like on the knight muzzle loader shotgun thumbhole it would be perfect

Just curious if anyone who has both the thumb hole and regular notice a difference in shooting speed when trying to get a quick shot off?  It seems like the thumb hole would require more time to get to and from the hammer to make a shot.

Thanks,

nope sure haven't it has the same amout of space between the hammer and scope and i think its easier because i can get to the trigger guard faster to open the gun. anyway its a single shot and i don't miss. not worried about a second shot

I was referring more to the first shot, not a follow up shot.  Just wondering if having to pull your thumb out of the hole and around the top of the hole to pull the hammer and then back again slows you down.  without the thumb hole seems like there is nothing in the way of the thumbs travel to the hammer and back to gripping the gun.  But, I've never had a thumbhole stock.  So, it is all hypothetical for me.  Wanted to know what someone who has both thinks.

i have no problem with it. when i am sitting my hand isn't in the stock its on the action so when a shot is presented i pull the hammer back and then move my hand into the stock and lift the gun into shooting position

I don't like thumb hole type stocks.....

What do you do when the buck of a life time is looking at you and you don't have the ability to turn your body?  Very difficult to take the 'weak' hand shot.....

i can get my left hand in the thumbhole just fine and fire. the postion of my best hunting spot is only where i can make a right handed shot. my blind is in a brush area and the left side is blocked and i couldn't and wouldn't shoot that way because it is all thick pines
