I had my Glenfield 30 out today doing some long range shooting.  It's pretty much an MOA gun from what I could tell. I really really like it.  I just may give up bolt guns completely.

The Remington 170 grain Core-Locts are fun to shoot and accurate. I could shoot them all day.

I paid $225.00 off the orphan rack, and I installed a Bushnell Banner 1.5-4.5 in Weaver Quad-Loc rings.  This rifle may be my new personal favorite.

AH the petting zoo.. I can't remember when one of my bolt guns had been out of the safe.  it's either a  Handi  or some sort of lever gun

I got my old Glenfield thuty-thuty out today. I haven't hunted with it in many years since I moved on to bolt rifles, I hunted with it alot as a kid.  The iron sights have been bent or something, it shoot high no matter how I set them so I E-bay'd a Simmons Prodiamond 4x32 scope & it arrived today. I gave the gun a thorough cleaning & bore polishing & took it to the range. Only took 4 shots to get it dialed in @ 25yds. I really like the "shotgun" scope on it. It's compact size looks good, it has a 5.5" eye relief & gets on target quick, & is very clear for a cheap scope. The rifle was my dads & now has new life. I can't wait to bring home some backstrap with it. ;)

The .30-30 has to be the best caliber of all time.  My first deer rifle was a Remington 788 .30-30.  It cost $95 at K-Mart when I was 16.  I put a cheap 2.5x scope on it and it shot like a house afire!  I'm sorry I still don't have it today.  It's rare to find a Marlin product like yours that doesn't shoot well.  They are cheap enough and plentiful.  They are very good guns to train young people with also.  Have your tried the .30-30 Wolf Gold ammo?  It's very good stuff and cheaper than you can handload.  You put a .30-30 slug into the vitals of almost any big game animal and you won't have to track it very far.  My new project is a Savage 340 bolt action .30-30 that I am fixing up for nostalgia's sake.  Enjoy!  BT

Here's a pic...of my 1968 era Glenfield 30.  I also have a Glenfield 30A that was made in 1982.



My youngest son had a 340 Savage as his first deer rifle.  I wish we'd kept it.  The Remington 788 in .30-30 would be cool to have.  I'll check out the Wolf Gold.

Great looking gun, I really like that short magazine tube...Classic!!! That's just what I am looking for in 30-30 to go along with my .35, I will put a set of see-through scope mounts on it for nostalgia though, they are on my .35 and have been for many years, just the ticket for thick woods hunting. I know many may knock them but for me they work great....<><....:)

I think the Glen-field is/was made by Marlin--I have never seen a marlin shoot bad yet. I suppose that there are  a few bad ones out there--but I have never seen one.  I have always wanted a savage  bolt action 30-30. I think it would be neat to load up some spitzer bullets for the 30-30 and see what it could do. I have read only one article on someone doing that--but they used a contender rifle. Claimed it was really good out to 200 yards. Probably have to free float the barrel and glass bed the action to get much in results--but just might be worth it. You sure would have a large range of bullet weights to choose from.

Oddly enough I see no need for pointed bullets.  Why try to make the .30-30 something it isn't?

Let me ask you, have you tried the new LE ammo from Hornady yet? Sight your gun in with the ammo you use now, then shoot a box of the LE. I think you will see the difference. I know the deer have.

I have a couple of Glenfields, a 30A and a 30AS.  Both are a joy to carry and shoot.  I just restocked the 30A with a XLR stock, shown below.

That's a nice looking rig.  I've always liked laminate and blued guns, even better than laminate and stainless.  If you don't mind, did you get the XLR stock direct from Marlin?  And how much?

No, I bought the stock off a guy on MarlinOwners forum.  He was going to restock an XLR with walnut from Marlin.  Here's a look at the other side.
