ANybody shot the new S&W 500 Yet ?
« on: June 17, 2003, 05:11:53 AM »
Was just wondering if anybody on the forum had shot one yet. We hav'nt even seen one in a gun shop around these parts ,Southern Teir of New York. The price of the gun sounds steep ,but that does'nt scare me as much as the price of the ammo ,if what they say about that is true.I personally hav'nt seen any real ammo prices either. I guess I would load my own anyway,if that is I owned one . But then again it don't cost nuthin' to dream a little.

Encore chambered for this caliber.  It was an SSK Experimental barrel loaned to a buddy of mine.  We were hunting at Show-Me-Safaris and there were 2 hog taken with this caliber that weekend.  Damage was awesome.  Entrance hole was larger than the exit.  Got it all on video.
The only thing you should feel when shooting insurgents is recoil.

Yeah, I shot the comped model at a local shooting fair last weekend. Recoil was about like a heavy loaded .44 magnum.  My .475Linebaugh is capable of taking any game animal I wish to hunt and is considerably more packable with a 5.5 inch barrel it fits in a regular holster on a regular gunbelt.  It was fun to shoot, but I don't need one. A gun store in my area has the shells but no guns.  The Corbons were $24 for a box of 12.  WOW!!!!!

I haven't shot one but I handled a regular production model at a friends shop. It fits my hand well and seems to have some pointability . The downside is that it is quite heavy. I do not believe that one could carry it in a hip holster with any degree of comfort. You would need a shoulder rig or something like the Von Ringler 3 in 1 holster to distribute the weight across the chest. It is big to say the least.

The 500 is S&W's apology for going along with Clinton gun policy.  I, for one, do not accept.

I have shot this gun two times,  once with a 275 grain barnes and once wth a 440 gr hard cast.

The gun belongs to someone at the gunclub.  He handloaded the above cartridges at a cost of $1 per shot (this includes the new brass so cost will be less on later reloads).  He maintains new factory ammo is as much as $36/12!  So this is a handloaders gun.

As near as I can tell this is a great gun for bowling pins.

The reloads we shot where starters and had lower powder charges and felt like a stiff load on my 44 with the 275 grain, and a little heavier on the 440gr.

The balance on thes 72 ounce gun was very suprising, it was easy to hold and draw a bead with out shakeing.  I feel the weight is well proportioned and helps reduce felt recoil effectivly.

I don't see getting one of these beasts personally, but this will possibly be a good collecter gun.

I should have a 500 by the weekend. With what you have shot so far, do you reccommend one cast bullet over the other? Thanks

Just received ammo for the Smith 500 a couple of days ago.  Sighted-in at 30 yards off sandbags from the hood of my truck.  I was shooting factory Cor-Bon ammo, both 275 grain Barnes and the 440 grain hard cast.  The 275 grainers were not too bad, as far as recoil is concerned.  The 440 hard cast is a handful.  Accuracy is more than acceptable.  I leave for Africa in July with this handgun and hope to take both elephant and cape buffalo.

Mark, are you doing an article for any magazine or will we hear about it in the JD's Sixgunner?  It is always intresting hearing performance on true game.

Gentlemen,  I plan on doing an article for SAFARI Magazine along with JD's SIXGUNNER.  Now if I can just get the game to cooperate.......I too am anxious to see how this cartridge performs on big game.  The revolver is very heavy and I haven't figured out just yet how to pack it around the bush.  I do plan on using open sights as shots should be fairly close.  Best of Hunting--Mark Hampton

Try putting the big gun in a upland game vest with the pockets to the game bag up front. This works for my 338 VVC which is a very heavy Encore and the grip is right where you need it.Good luck!

I can't agree with the argument that the .44 mag will work for anything I hunt. I do agree with the critics like Keith that believed  that "you never have too much gun for the job". Just about the time I would agree with the first group I'd run into something that would make a fool out of me, and not want to give me a second chance at living.
