MKII open sights
« on: June 17, 2003, 05:35:56 AM »
I'm looking to replace the stock irons sites on my Ruger. I don't want a scope/red dot as this pistol lives under my seat and I only carry it around to shoot snakes and grouse. I need it compact but I'd like some good open sights so I can shoot it to it's full potential. Thanks for the advice and any links would be great.

OPEN SIGHTS

On my open sight pistols I convert the sights to a "V" notched rear and a post w/bead on front.

On the rugers I order and extra rear sight blade and an additional front ramp and I find an old rifle front site with a bead on it.

1) I take the rear blade and fill the notch with JB Weld, when it dries I take a dremel tool or a triangle file and put a "V" notch in it.

2) Take the front site and cut off the blade and JB Weld the rifle bead site to it.

NOTE: Allow the JB Weld to set for 24hrs.

This has worked great on all of my open sight pistols that I have installed it on.

I replaced my stock Ruger Mark II sights with a set of Willliams Fire Sights. These are high quality adjustable sights with fiber optic inserts that increase sight acquisition and low light application. You can find them at WWW/Williamsgunsight.com/, or call 1800-530-9028 and request the catalog for their Fire Sights. For some reason the web site does not show a picture of the sight?? I really like 'em, about $43.00.

I just bought a Ruger 22/45 and I really do not like the sights, even tho the piece shoots very well. I am going to buy a set of Williams FireSights from Midway for under $40.
They look really sharp and the tech from Ruger says you can install them yourself.

I looked at the Firesights before I bought my red dot. They look to be a pretty straightforward installation. My Dad has a set of Firesights on his Flintlock and they make a world of difference.
All in all, the factory MKII sights aren't that bad. They're just way bigger than most people like sights to be.
