encore carbine barrel ?
« on: October 29, 2007, 12:20:54 PM »
Other than MGM & eabco & TC what are some barrel makers that can do a 18in ss carbine bbl for the encore ? I may be wrong but i think $410 OTD is to much for just a bbl .Not looking for anything special just standard contour in 308 win

So factory @ $300, add $35 for cut/crown, add shipping both ways and how much have you saved over that custom tube?

I am going to play devils advocate here:

Good used barrel if you take the time to look  $225 to 250
cut job $35
shipping around 25 both ways

It can be done for less than three hundred.  I know I have done it.

Problem:  I have done this three times and two of the barrels took alot of loading time to find a pet load.  Standard loads didn't want to work right.  Personally I will just pay for a custom from now on as I can pick the rate of twist.

Second option:  Buy a good used pistol barrel.  Easier to find than rifle barrel and usually under 225.  Send to foxridge T/C's custom shop for M break.  Puts it over 16" is welded on and makes it legal for rifle stock.  Drawback:  Loud as Heck.  I have done this before and will probably do it again as At 16 1/4" I can still use it as a pistol or switch it to rifle.

I will more than likely just shop around for a nice used one at a gun show and have it cut to length by a local smith or do it my self . Superdown

Sounds like a plan.  My local guy will cut and recrown with a 11 degree target crown for less than 50.  He cut a remington 700 adl in 223 down to 17.5" and I love it for close work in thick cover.

Fair enough... as long as you acknowledge that if one is wiling to lie low in the grass you can get a whale of a deal on a custom barrel as well. For example, I have bought 8 or 10 custom TC pistol barrels in the past few years from big names ranging from 10" to 15" in length and have never paid more than $200 a piece.

This one's 16.25" from MGM, and I don't remember it being that expensive.

Kmac that's exactly what i want . I got a pro hunter 308 pistol and then ordered the pro hunter rifle stocks . What kind of sights do you have on there they look pretty nice. If you don't mind me asking how much did that BBL run OTD. Thanks , Justin

A mind is a terrible thing to lose.

I believe that the barrel was around $ 355 or $375.  At the time I was purchasing, it was the ONLY short barrel I could find in one of the calibers I was seeking, and I would have paid more.  I didn't want to wait 12 weeks for a special order - I just don't have that kind of patience.  I spent extra to have the barrel shipped next day to meet me on the road at a hotel, and the total including shipping was under $400.

The front sight is a TC fiber optic from (I think) a pistol.  I had a machine shop drill and tap the barrel to mount it.  I'm still working on a rear sight.  I tried a scope base/peep sight combo (If you look REAL close you can see the peep on the ramp at the back of the scope base).  That peep is actually for the muzzleloaders.  Since the barrel is slightly tapered (It's a heavy barrel configuration) the front sight is too low.

What I'm working on is an iron sight configuration to use as backup in case the scope poops out.  I can either get a shim made to raise the front sight or find a rear sight to mount in "scout" fashion forward of the scope base.  If the latter, I'd have to remove the scope base to use the sights.

Anyway I couldn't be more pleased.  Groups less than 1" at 100, less than 2" at 200 off the bags.  And it breaks down small enough to fit in a backpack!

Oh, and BTW - the scope's a Nikon ProStaff with BDC reticle, and the rings are Leupold quick-release.

That's pretty much the setup i am going for but just to be a little different i think i am going with a Nikon 1.5-7x32 and a 18in bbl with the same rings but was thinking of using the AO ghost ring night sights for same reason if the scope happens to crap out. if all else fails i will try and get a ss katahdin bbl in 45-70 or 460. Why not try a Bergara barrel for under $200 and get it cut down?
