Remington CoreLokt 30-30 - 150 or 170 Grain for Deer?
« on: October 29, 2007, 03:18:06 PM »
I Have a Handi 30-30 that I'll be using for Whitetail this year.  I plan to use factory Remington CoreLokt 30-30 ammo.  Will 150 grain work fine, or should I go with 170 grain?  Max shot range is about 125 yards.

Thanks.

All my groups are shot at 100yd and further, none of that close stuff, I'll leave that to the shortgun shooters. ;)

I'm a big fan of the Remington Core-lokt bullets-especially at .30-30 velocities.  I think the folks in green got these bullets right.   And I've had good experiences with both weights.   All I'll tell you with respect to the 150 is that my Handi prints about the same as Tim's target AND I have yet to recover one from a deer.

My most recent experience is typical:  Several weeks ago, I sat with a first time (youth) hunter who was using my .30-30 Handi (youth stocked).  Chris shot a spikehorn at about 50 yards.  Looking through the smallish hole in our tent blind, I misjudged the angle Chris had on his deer.  The buck was apparently quartering toward the young hunter more acutely than I thought.  The 150 gr. Core-lokt entered just in front of the left shoulder, passed on an angle through both lungs and liver before exiting out through the hardwoods.  The deer traveled about 50 yards.

Either bullet will work great. Let your gun decide which one it prefers. This is what I did with my Marlin 30-30 and it liked the 170's.
Get yourself a box of each and see if one is more accurate than the other.

GOOD SHOOTING!

Core lokts in a 30-30. That's what I grew up with.
The 150g is perfect for deer.
The 170g does perform better on deer behind brush though.

Sometimes that "deer" behind the brush isn't a deer!!

Be careful!!
