? on .22 Hornet load
« on: October 29, 2007, 05:25:21 PM »
Hey all, I have gone and orderd brass and dies for my soon to come .22 hornet. I have IMR 4198 to use (just some pwder that i stopped using in the .223) and 40 gr hornys. Can somebody share a load with me that will work to get started with the hornet? Anyone know if varget will work with the hornet? I dont have my loading books with me at the moment.
Thanks! Hank.

Hodgdon doesn't show Varget for any Hornet load, IMR4198 is shown for 45gr and heavier bullets tho. Do yourself a favor and pick up a bottle of Hodgdon Lil'gun, it's ideal hornet powder, low pressure and high velocity, perfect for a Handi.  ;)

Yes, the 40gr Vmax, but it didn't shoot as good as the 35gr for me, but lots have used it with great accuracy, there's a hornet load thread a few pages back. ;)

Try Lil' Gun or AA 1680. I prefer 40 V-Max over 35 V-Max because of the tapered base on the 40. (easier to seat with less crushed necks)

My CZ shoots 40 grain vmax bullets with Lil Gun (12.5) in WW cases at 2950 fps well under one inch. Hard to ask more of the Hornet.

If you want to get that Handi Hornet shooting accurately quickly,  I recommend the following.

1)  Once fired brass from your Handi Hornet

2)  Lil gun powder

3) CCI or Rem 6.5 small rifle primers

4) Neck size only the once fired brass

5)  Evaluate your loads at 50 yards rather than 100.  The lil Hornet is wind sensitive.  This eliminates one objective while testing.  BTW- your 50 yard zero will nearly be your 100 yard zero with a 40 v max / lil gun load.  So it gets you very close for future 100 yard testing when conditions are ideal.
