7-08 Accuracy ??
« on: October 30, 2007, 01:21:51 PM »
I am thinking of going with a 7-08 and don't really know what rifle or what kind of accuracy to expect.

What kind of accuracy do you guys get??

My Savage will do a little less than 1 MOA with 5 shots @100 yards.
My Sako is about the same.  I have a Browning that was about 1 MOA as well.
I have killed SEVERAL deer with the 7-08 and you will love it!!!

The 7mm-08 shares its case from the parent .308 which has been dubbed as "inherently accurate."  Truth be told, many .308s that I have shot have been very accurate with at least a couple of factory loads.  As such, you should generally expect the same from the 7mm-08.  I owned a couple of these and, also with at least a couple of factory loads (or more) I can get sub 1" groups at 100 yards.

To date, the best factory load that has given me the best accuracy is the Hornady Light Magnum load.

I foolishly sold a Browning A-Bolt in 7-08 that would easily shoot sub moa 5 shot groups.

Sad to say, it may be the only rifle you will ever need to buy.  I had (given to son) a Remington Classic that I used to routinely win factory matches with.  I have another that goes back to when it was still a wildcat. It sez "7mm-308" on the barrel.  My son used a model 7 with the 18.5" barrel to make our longest shot --290 long steps-- on a mule deer with.  You can tell, I admire the 7-08.  It would not be my first choice for elk but if it were my only rifle, I'd load up a batch of 160's and go elk hunting.

I have a Savage LH 11FL in 7mm-08 that will shoot bullet weights from 120 gr to 150 gr, all sub MOA for three shots.

I had a  7-08 A-Bolt that would shoot 1 MOA accuracy with any load you wanted to poke through it. For some dumb reason, I traded it.

I am getting 1/2" groups with my out of the box Ruger Hawkeye and Nikon Monarch.  150 gr. Win PP, will improve w/ 139 gr BTSP Hndy's.

I have heard all good about the 7-08 accuracy, but how does it kill?
I hunt deer with a 3006 usually 150 gr. and they all just fall down after being hit in the shoulder lung area.  Not always dead when I get there but never get up.
I would like to get another gun for deer and have settled on 7mm-08, 6.5x55 or 260 rem.  (I know the last 2 are comparable but I wonder if the .260 will fade away like so many loads.
And approximately what is the difference in recoil from 3006 to 7mm 08?

Recoil from an 06 (depending on bullet weight and powder charge) will be around 18-20 #'s.  A 7m-08 will be around 14-15#'s.  I have had 3 7m-08's shooting 120 and 140 gn bullets.  You take the same shots with them as your 06 and you can expect the same results.  The caliber is excellent and is easy to hunt with in a light rifle.  It is always one of my 1st recommendations when somebody asks "what caliber should I look at for general hunting".

They will fall down, dead, if you aim well... how does that compared to a 30-06? Try one in each and find out.  Dead is dead, no matter the cartridge used.

I have a Tikka Stainless 7mm-08 that shoots very well. Many people knock them for various reasons, but it I only have two rifles that I can change bullets and loads, that change the point of impact. Find out where it is shooting and adjust the scope 2 clicks at the time and move the impact spot on the target to the accuracy of measuring it with a ruler and the Tikka is one of them. It will shoot many loads under 3/4" MOA and some even tighter. Needless to say my 7mm-08 shoots better than I can.

As far as taking game efficiently, it is a killing machine. If I had to take my Grandmother Hunting for deer sized game I would give her my Tikka and feel perfectly confident that she would be able to take care of business. Pick out the rifle that fits you the best and buy it!

Felt recoil should be about 1/2 of the 30-06.

Good Luck!

I have a custom VZ-24 Mauser with just a cheap Adams & Bennett barrel that shoots MOA with 140 grain Remington Core Lokt ammo.  I've tried several factory loads and it shoots this better than anything else I've tried (Hornady, Federal, Winchester).  Just goes to show that every gun has ammo that it likes.  Attached is a pic of the targets from my session with it the other day.  The top target was at 100 yards and just figuring out what load shoots best and the bottom target is at 300 yards after sighting in 3" high at 100 yards.  I didn't measure the group, but you can see that its MOA or a tiny bit better.

My son's Mod. 700 Mountain Rifle with no modifications will shoot a three shot group of 5/8" at 100 steps using a round bale of hay for a rest.
