Phone call from the Big Sand Box
« on: October 30, 2007, 01:33:05 PM »
Got a call from my son, he's a navy See-Bee.  He is doing well, and the job is keeping him busy.  He could not tell me his location but the camp is pretty secure.  The camp is totally surrounded by Marines and those boys are not playing.

He's been promoted since he got there, and he is enjoying his new found rank.  He was talking about the young kids, most are great, but a few complain about the heat, and why me, I want to go home.  He said a few minutes out back with the men and the problem is taken care of.  The women is a different story, just got to listen to them.  He is very adamant about the fact he feels women do not belong over there, at least not in heavy construction.  He feels they are more trouble than they are worth.

I told him I had the same problem when I was over there, just suck it up and deal with it.

A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

Yup and send him a care package once in awhile. They get the major type treats over there but if there are some local favorites he'll really appreciate them. I sent my friend a brand of pop called Sun Drop and he really enjoyed it. They are not supposed to receive booze either but if you put it in another type of bottle they do not check into them. Most of all tell him thanks and that the people of America appreciate what he is doing.

My son called back this morning, before the wife left for work.  He apologized for venting yesterday, and had a long talk with the wife about how to deal with young women.  She explained how he has a different outlook on things than they do.  She told him you have a problem relating because they are just kids, they are 18, and 19 years old.  You're an old man (38) to them.  Well she spent 20 minutes giving advice from the female NCO standpoint.  She's also a retired NCO, and current DOD employee doing the same thing she did on active duty, and dealing with young solders everyday.  At the end of the conversation she reminded him his main job is to come home safe, and to bring all those kids home safe with him.  He agreed that's his goal.

Thanks all you guys for your well wishes.  Rog  (Sourdough, The other graybearded old man)

Give your son my thanks for his service..he is part of the most capable and professional military we have ever assembled.

Yes; those Marines ( esp the Spec Ops types) don't "play around" when they are in enemy territory. Knowing my grandson and some of his fellow Marines,
I would not want to be a terrorist coming against them..chances are very good that I would be very dead, very quickly !
If you don't want the truth, don't ask me.  If you want something sugar coated...go eat a donut !  (anon)
