94 receiver finish
« on: October 31, 2007, 06:32:02 AM »
I just picked up a 94 and the finish is mostly off the receiver. It almost looks like paint. The rifle was made in 1974 and I am wondering if I should leave it alone or not. The bluing is in good shape on the rest of the rifle. I paid $200 for it.

If you don't care, it can be left alone & used as is, but you'll pay the piper, trying to reblue it.

Those years, IIRC, Winchester changed the metal used for the M94 receivers, and put the factory finish on after a plating process.

If you want a newer look, use a bake-on, Teflon-type finish for a good utility gun.
