A couple of questions for reloaders
« on: November 02, 2007, 07:07:32 PM »
1. How many of you turn your case necks to a uniform thickness?

2. How many of you use a Lee factory crimp die after seating your bullets?

I haven't ever turned any case necks in my 30+ years of reloading. I'm thinking about
doing it though. I understand the Lee crimp die will also help with accuracy.
What say you guys?

I turn the necks on my 22-250 and my 221. Both are superb bolt guns employing only neck sizing. I doubt that neck turning would benefit Handi accuracy unless you have more that .002 thickness variation in neck thickness. If you do decide to try it(it's fun) remove a minimum of brass to clean up 80% max of outside of neck to keep the necks as thick as possible.

I crimp cartridges to be used in a high power repeaters to avoid having the bullets shift from recoil. I also crimp those cartridges that are known to benefit from crimping such as the 22 Hornet and lead cast cartridges in 45-70.

For a Handi most cartridges should just have ordinary neck tension for best accuracy. IMHO.

I don't turn necks and do use the factory crimp die.  Larry

No on the neck turning, but I crimp with a Lee FCD on 17 of the 22 chamberings I load for.  ;)

I have only needed turned necks for 1 cartridge...and only use a Lee F/C die for the 45-70...My loads are tuned for no crimp/no turn...but even bullet pull...I have never had any issues with the accuracy of my loads...

I have only neck turned cases I have down sized, like 223 to 221 Fire Ball, because I have to to get them to fit. I am fussy about accuracy, but I have not gone to that extreme yet, but never say never. I have only crimped the straight walled cases. I have not crimped bottle necked cartridges. I try to seat the bullets into the lands, so I feel a crimp is not needed. But, I have been thinking about crimping some of them lately that do not reach the lands for one reason or another, never say never. I have hesitated, because it works the neck more, shortening the case life. I have not shot cast bullets in bottle necked cases, but I would think that would be a necessity because the cast bullets do not have much resistance in the barrel. Never say never.

I have never neck turned a case, but know I should when necking .308 down to 7mm-08.

I have several Lee FCDs and use them on all semi auto handgun ammo as well as .223/5.56 for my ARs and .35 Rem for my Model 8.  I've also used the FCD on 7mm-08 and 8x57 but I haven't determined if it really helps accuracy.
Cordially,

(1) - No

(2) - Yes, but not for my Handi Rifles. For those I use the LEE Collet Dies.

....I am not the world's leading expert on reloading, nor am I even the most knowledgeable (spelling?) reloader on this page, but if my poor beer and whiskey soaked memory banks are working correctly, I believe that neck turning is only useful using the same cases in the same gun (but the handi does not respond well to ammo that is not full length resized and best accuracy from reloads is according to lee reloading manuals achieved without crimping....crimping of cast bullets was done to the old military loads for the 45-70 in order to let the old BLACK POWDER

Dang, too late again.

(yes, once because I was bored and got a free Sinclair neck turning thing)

(no, because I think that it is only appropriate for high recoiling rifles--excess of 25 lbs--and I shoot 270,7-08,223)

Reloading is complicated enough without 2 more steps.
