Double Rifle Regulation Options?
« on: November 03, 2007, 01:18:37 AM »
I just picked up a 30-06 O/U double rifle.  The primary application will be Texas deer at 100-200 yards, a secondary application would be hogs at those ranges.  Any suggestions on how I should regulate it?  I have 150 gr, 165 and 185gr ammo.

Thanks

Your going to have to figure out what bullet and style your going to shoot in that bbl. set.  Once regulated for that ammo, that's what you will have to keep on using in it, unless you want to re-regulate it for something else...

165's would be pretty good for where you live, and guess what bullet i like best???  lol

Anyway, after that, buy up a quanity of "that" ammo, and regulate it...

I think i need to drive on down there and get you set up in reloading your own!!

I was thinking about advice along the lines of:
1. What barrel should be setup to be shot first?
2. Should the top barrel be regulated to shoot 1.5 inches high at 100 yards?
3. If the bottom barrel is regulated to shoot 1.5 inches high at 100 yards, will it have the same point of impact as the top barrel at 200 yards?
4. What bullet (heavier or lighter) would be better regulated in the top barrel?
5. Given the bottom barrel has the lighter trigger should it be regulated for 200 yards?  If so how do I regulate it at a 100 yard range?

Thanks
Doug

   Here's what i've learned about 412 DR's...

  1. ALWAYS fire the bottom bbl first..  When your regulating and when your hunting!

  2. I always regulated the double 06's for 100 yds, (start at a closer range, and then move the target to 100 for the final regulation) and then checked them at other ranges...  For long shots, i always used the bottom bbl...  If you want the gun to shoot 1-1/2" high at 100, then ajust the scope for that just like any other rifle!

  3. I'm not understanding why you would do this in the first place????

  4.  Every double 06 i ever fired shot amazingly good, and were NOT picky about bullet weights.

  5.  Stop worrying about trigger weights, and get use to what you have.  Regulate the bbl set at 100 yds, and try it at other ranges...

  6. and i'll throw this in too....  If you hand load for a Valmet DR, test the loads for pressure in the top bbl., and any load that works in the top bbl for pressure, will for sure work in the bottom bbl...

I have decided to have the bottom barrel regulated for 165gr for .5 inches high at 100 yards, then have the top barrel regulated for 150gr for 1.5 inches high at 100 yards.  I should not need to change the elevation between the barrels and interestingly most ballistics tables have the 150gr and 165gr following the same trajectory, so I should be able to use both rounds in the top barrel without reregulating the barrel.

Dough, why would you complicate your life by using 2 different weight bullets? How will you know which is which after them jingeling around in your pockets for a few days?

I guess I have always been a one gun one load kind of guy. Won't that work in a double rifle? Byron

Bryon
thats a great question.  The short answer is that it really wont matter that much with the 30-06.

To obtain a 200 yard 0 with softpoints from Federal the 150gr and 165gr they should be 1.8 inches high at 100 yards. The 165gr from Winchester should be 2 inches high at 100 yards to obtain a 0 at 200 yards.  In the end we are looking at a .2 inch difference at 100 yards between the Federal 150gr and 165gr softpoints and the 165gr Federal ammo.

The short part of the long answer is that: In the end we are looking at a .2 inch difference at 100 yards between the Federal 150gr and 165gr softpoints and the 165gr Federal ammo.

That STILL doesn't answer why you would regulate a double for two different bullet weights that are so close together....

Why not pick one or the other???  The 165's will do anything the 150's will and more, so why complicate things??

I have both... So why not use both.  And the only 30-06 is the DR.

Dough, I would pick the weight I wanted to hunt with and sight in both barrels for it. Then use up the other one just plinking to get used to the gun.

Actually if it were me I probably would regulate both barrels for a good 180gr bullet and use both the 150s and 165s to plink with. Regards, Byron

Interestingly I have some 180 gr ammo but the trajectory is the same as the 165gr.  Also some 125gr has the same trajectory as the 150gr.

For the 30-06 125gr to 180 gr the trajectory range is .2 inches for a 0 at 200 yards.  Ummm looks like there might not be a need for a lot of regulation.

Byron,
its from Federal for the softpoints and Winchester.  I thought it was interesting.  However due to the weather I have not been able to regulate the 30-06 double rifle.  S I can not attest to the accuracy of their data.

When it comes to using different weights with the '06, I have found that the 150 grain in the rifles I used shot about 6 inches from where the 165 gr and 180 gr. landed.  I also found in my rifles that the 165 and 180 grain bullets at 100 yards would hit the same point of contact at 100 yards.  Since the 165 shoots like the 150 but hits at the same point when zeroing as the 180, it made more sense for me to concentrate on the 165 and 180.  I believe the reason for the difference in points of impact is the recoil and how the barrel moves with the different weights.  The rifle barrel twist is another factor.  Jack O'Connor noted that '06 barrels with a 1in12 twist shoot the 150 and 180 grain bullets to the same point of contact but the industry standard is 1 in 10.  Hope this helps.

Another solution might be this.  Use one weight but different styles.  A boat tail softpoint for long range and deer and then a Nosler Parition or similar deep penetrator for the heavier stuff.  By the way, I punched a 150 grain Powerpoint through a 250 lb boar - no recovery.  It broke the off shoulder on the way out.

After screwing around with the 150gr, 165gr and 180gr.  I have standardized on the 165gr.  For Texas deer I am using the Federal 165 gr Nosler Ballistic Tip and for larger stuff I have the Winchester Supreme 165gr Fail Safe.

I noticed the Byron was right on in that the 150 gr  had a significantly different point of impact vs the 165gr or 180 gr.  I believe I have used all the 150 gr and do not plan on purchasing more of the 150gr.  The point of impact ween the 150 gr and the 165 gr/180 gr was about 5 inches.  Too much for me hence the standardization on the 165 gr and probably adding the 180gr.
