I thought I was good at knowing every city in Wis, but Herbster I had to google. That is right near the Chequamegon national forest. Nearest public hunting I can think of.

Ifya go near Clam lake, don't shoot the elk  :D

jh45gun might also know the area well, I think

Not too familiar with it though I did hunt near Port Wing for a few years with some friends. I would get a copy of a plat book and look as not only is there normally Bayfield Co forest land plus the National Forest there normally is Forest Crop land that is open to the public too lots of it in Douglas Co so I would suspect that Bayfield Co has more than its share too. Usually Libraries carry pat books for reference.
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.

Just to get you excited, I've got 2 buddies that hunt separate areas up near there and they're usually pretty successful. One hunts private and the other public.  I know it's not a done deal, but it's nice to hear of good deer being taken atleast in the same general area of the state.
I don't know how heavy the hunting pressure is, but that's a pretty big chunk of woods to hunt up there.
