advantage of rimmed cartridge
« on: November 03, 2007, 07:03:11 PM »
I have a 223 and a 30 herrett.  Both operate flawlessly and very accurate.  I have read the there is an advantage to a rimmed cartridge in the contender.  What's the scoop?

It's easier to get a hold of the brass - that's it.

There is no truth to improved accuracy claims - that's a myth

Do you mean to buy the brass or for the ejector to get hold of the case?

The extractor fits into the grove at the base of a rimless cartridge, and that makes the spent round a little harder to get out of the barrel.  Rimmed cases don't have the grove, and don't have the problem.  They work either way, just a little easier with a rimmed case.

I do understand that there is a mythological difference between the way they headspace or something... such that over all length or shoulder formation is more critical.. that is what I was told recently but my brain was on pause as I only have the other type of cases ... mine come out easlly enough for me... but .... hey the JDJ rounds are made on such rimmed cases so there is probably nothing too bad to say about them from any perspective.. If I was into dangerous game, a rimmed cartridge would be the choice...

In one of my Encore barrels, the problem with rimless cases was that one would sometimes slip right past the extractor and into the chamber without the extractor engaging the extractor groove in the case.  When that happens, you have to wiggle and weasel the cartridge back out of the chamber and try again.  You sure can't close the action, and the case hangs up on the extractor, so you can't just dump it right back out.  In hunting situations, that's a bad thing.  Rimmed cartridges eliminate this problem, making them more reliable when you're loading under stress.

All bottle neck rounds rimmed or not should be headspaced on the neck.  I'm still one who much prefers rimmed cases.  GOOD SHOOTIN', Walt  ;)

I fired tens of thousands of both cases in IHMSA competition and never had any problem with the rimless cases, even in weather below -20F.  That said - I can see how a a poorly-fitted extractor could cause a problem.    All bottlenecked cases should headspace on the shoulder, regardless of the rim or action type.
