Whole New Definition of the Word "Accuracy"
« on: November 04, 2007, 02:23:57 AM »
WOW!!!! I just went out for my first extended shooting session with my new (to me) 44HV with an 8 inch bbl.  WOW!!!!

I have never shot a hand gun that was even CLOSE to this in accuracy!

From the bench, I had a 25 yard group with the RCBS 44-250K sitting on top of 10 grains of Unique.  It was 1 ragged hole!

The rest of the day I continued to amaze myself with this gun/load combo.  Most of my off hand groups were as good or better than any of my bench tested groups with my Smiths and Rugers!

Kinda of ruins my pleasure in my other guns.

Is it hard to get different size bbls to fit this gun?

I wonder if this is a fluke, or if I can expect the same kind of accuracy if I purchase a 4 or 6 inch bbl.

What say you guys...is this the norm?

Is everyone tempted to sell all their other handguns after shooting a DW just to have the money to replace them with only Dan Wessons?

WOW!!!!!

That still amazes me…I don’t care who you are or how much I care about you, I would never let you kill my son.  I can’t even begin to understand how much He loves us.

Welcome to the world of DW;  my first was a model 15 right out of the box it shot 1/2" groups at 25 yds and I've owned DW's every since.  For the price at the time such accuracy was unbelievable.  The prices have come up quite a bit, but they still have the best accuracy for the price, as well as the interchangeability of the barrels.

Does anybody know if the barrels that are being currently produced (are they being produced?  I certainly hope so!!!) will interchange with the older (i.e. my Monson) guns?

If so, are they up to the accuracy level of these older jewels?

The new barrels fit fine on the older guns, except the ones with the tang that hangs down. I have a 715 and a 15, and a new 4"SS barrel that I swap around with an older 6" SS and a blued 4", that all shoot the same as other barrels the same length do. I really lucked out on that 4"SS barrel, the guy selling it must have thought the lead in it was pitting or something, it did look bad, but a couple of passes with a Lewis lead remover had it shining like new.

What does this tang look like and where is it on the gun?  Is this the stud that goes down into the grip?

The earliest models had a shroud that were nicknamed porkchop barrels because of their shape.  The tang was actually an extension below the ejector rod housing to the front of the trigger guard face.  The newer barrels are actually even more accurate than the older ones,  the rifling is smoother and more lands than the older barrels.

Thanks much Dave!

I think I should go ahead and spend the money on DW stuff as soon as I can save it up.  Otherwise I will just waste it on silly things like food and heat.

The DW stuff should last longer!

I feel the same way.  I have owned or shot: T/C Contender, Colt Anaconda, S&W 629, Taurus Raging Bull, Ruger SBH all in 44 mag.  IMO, none of them compared to my DW 445 SuperMag.  My first DW was a model 15 357.  That got me hooked.  It was the first pistol I could shoot accurately after almost swearing off pistols.  My only regret was selling that 357 to buy the 445SM.  Wish I would have got the money elsewhere for the 445SM.  I'm looking at getting another barrel or 2 for mine.  As far as revolvers go, I would not think of buying anything but a DW.
