My Nov 2/2007White Tail Buck
« on: November 05, 2007, 04:22:00 AM »
Sorry it was not taken with a Handi because of unreliable used brass which I will fix in the next day or two. I got four more tags one is reserved for the Ruger #3 in 375 Winchester the other three I will fill with the
257R Ultra Handi. I love the 257 Roberts and the 7x57 two much under-rated cartridges.

The deer was taken with my Ruger #1 in 257 Roberts this an out of
production rifle, bought it this year it is like new.. The bullet was 100gr Nosl.partition. The range was under 100yrds down hill, easy shot in the
upper neck. The bullet is not one of my favorates but in this rifle they shoot
extreamly well. So as always feed the rifle what it likes.

Yes it is confusing, we don't count the brow tines, me thinks? With them the
count woud be 10.

Whiteoper.
Sorry but I don't tell anybody where I hunt. Many years ago I toke a guy
hunting in the area I frequent. Next thing I know he brings a herd of hunters. They drove all over the fields never asking for permission. Subsequently the farmer shut down the hunting to every one including me.

Every time I meet this guy he has someone new with him, bringing more and more hunters to the area and leave thrash behind.

Recently I have re-established good relations with the farmer again and have
permission to hunt on his land with my friend, no one else.

Some of these ill minded persone have shot four of his cattle. I feel very bad about that thinking that it may have been some body hes has brought to the area.

What don't you like about the head, is it partitions in general or just that one. Even though not always required or a little tough (I found the 338 225 partition is not a great deer bullet) for the game at hand, not liking a nosler partition is sort of like not liking ice cream.

Is it accuracy?

Nice deer though I head out this week, 4 tags to fill. A buddy was out last week  the mule deer buck were still in bachelor groups, can't quite see in the picture but it looks like your buck was still pre-rut.

Sounds like a good policy Fred.  Around Whitecourt we have lots of crown land to hunt without hunting private lands; however, even when hunting on crown land good hunting practices go along way with the oil companies and logging companies who's lease roads often provide access to much of the local crown land.

About 40 years ago I was shooting a 257Wby MkV and had three complete failures with 115gr Nosler Partitions. They were of a different design then,
than we have now. But I never ever looked at another Nosler Partition until about two years ago when I killed two does to test them with my 25 Hunter. Both deer were shot throught ribs both ran, one 200 yrds the other 150. Not much to brag about that. They did not do a whole lot of damage but bled the deer out.

Hence that buck got shot in the neck my favorite spot to shoot any game.
Well for that I don'y need expensive bullets. I used the the 100gr Hornady Interlock in the 25 Hunter to drop 29 animals with 33 shots non ever ran.

Two years ago I droped a moose with the 257 Handi and a Speer 100gr Hot core. The moose dropped in his tracks.

As for the 257 Roberts Ruger#1 I doubt I shoot any more game with that rifle for a while. I only got 4 rounds left with 100gr Partition. No I wont buy any more of those. Alas they are very accurate in that rifle.

I know what you mean about keeping an area secret, been there, done that.

I agree Fred most of the time the premiums are not really needed, about the only time I would say you should is with a fast magnum or a round that is on the small size to the task at hand.  Oddly the two runners I had with my 338 were both shot with partitions. This year i have decided to try hornady interbonds a try in both my 270 and 338 , they worked out very well in the 338 accuracy wise, we will see some on game performance this week. I ran out of time so the 270 is still using 130 seirra's , I find they are a little too soft,  they don't exit and I have yet to recover a bullet.

I have a 7-08 barrel coming from the exchange it for my boys to use so I'll be really interested how your youth loads you had perviously mentioned perform.

No I wont have it mounted. I got a whole bunch of deer horns already, a few better than that one. Thanks for asking.

Bearbeater.
My eyes are great, they are now like hawk eyes. No I did not use iron sights. We hunt in very open country and iron sights would be a handicap. Besides I  don't have any good iron sights. My Ruger#1 in 7x57 and the 375 Win #3 have factory open sights under the scope. I never even tried them to see where they shoot.

I always  take two rifles on a  hunt just in case a scope gets broken, or what ever.
The spare gun is never far away.

Fred'

great deer, except for the tear in his belly.....     was he sick?

i saw a few months back that weatherby is (still?) loading hornady bullets in some of their ammo'.   that tells me a lot about how well they work.   i don't think there's a better bullet for the money than either the hornady spire point or the remington core-lokt.    i've seen too many endorsements over the years to believe otherwise.

keep up the good work and take care,
